The middle and top sections are meant to be hard to put together... that's what makes them sturdy. There are holes in each but that's just to match them, they don't correspond to anything. There's a little nub indentation on one end and that's on purpose to make it fit very tightly so that it will never bend or break.I agree, it would be impossible to just push these together with your hands, however the instructions on this page show how to bang it against concrete or asphalt to get it together. I did exactly what the instructions said and it worked perfectly.It seems very sturdy and the multipronged base seems great. It went into my soil well and it's exactly what I needed.
