They work just like a mechanical pencil and expose the lead little by little with each click of the end. I love that feature! My pervious 2mm mechanical pencil would send the entire piece of lead out with one click/holding down the end.The main reason I wanted these pencils were because they were a plain metal body and came in a set of two. I have two different leads I like to use but only had one pencil that could house the lead.
