I happened to find this series of Henry Reed books and absolutely loved them. They are "kids" books, but I recently purchased them to read them as an adult. Henry Reed is a young teen who lives a summer with his Aunt and Uncle. Henry writes about his summer in a journal (not a diary as he points out). Now the journal is less about emotion and feelings and more about storytelling and documenting the events. What's great about Henry Reed is the level of thought that goes into the various schemes - whether to make money or to experiment. It shows a level of imagination in kids that is hard to find these days. Now these schemes have a good goals or intentions, but always result in some sort of roadbumps and humor. The series are a little dated for today's kids, but it's a fun read and provides kids with a great view of life before electronics dominated our lives. It shows how kids can use their imaginations and creativity for fun. I highly recommend this series of books! There, he finds a dog he names Agony, and he meets his next door neighbor, Midge Glass, leading him and Midge to set up a business in his family’s old barn. They solve many individual problems over the course of the book, but the overarching problem is that one of Midge’s rabbits escapes, and they are looking for it. Sometimes this gets them in trouble with their grumpy neighbors, the Apples, and sometimes things go wrong, very wrong. I really liked this book because it was really realistic. I was sucked into the story from the first chapter, and I felt like you could feel their excitement when they think they have the rabbit, to their disappointment when he escapes, again. In summary, this is a really good book with lots of funny moments and wonderful main characters. I had read this book, that was written 26 years ago, while helping with a Battle of the Books program several years ago.
