I would say "no". I used it to help create holes in difficult ground, to plant new hedge plants, where old hedge and tree roots abound. It copes with the tough ground, but simply jams on any substantial roots. And...a hand drill isn't really strong enough to drive it through roots. For £12 (ish) it's great for breaking into difficult, un-dug surfaces, but I think you'll need a more muscular (or chemical) approach to your elder. ROB **Q: Is it well made? A battery operated drill is ok if you have very, very soft sandy soil so I advise an electric drill.
