It works
I had my doubts in the first week. I had moles everywhere running around. it seems like this thing attracted moles rather than kept them away but at the end of the second week they disappeared. It's been three weeks and they are gone. I am buying another one for the front yard. Update....Date purchased 6/27/20, it stopped working 7/26/20. I called customer support and the women quickly offered to replace it with a new one, no questions asked. Great service. Also, I use this with the Victor granules. The spike works ok but the granules help.

does not work at night
I have used this model, buying at walmart. Seemed to do the job. The ones I had did finally die. bought some cheaper versions on here and they were junk. Went ahead and bought 4 of these. I set all 4 outside in direct sunlight for a whole day before placing in the yard and turning them on. First 2 worked as soon as i turned them on. 3rd one did not, after a few minutes it did start up. The 4th one did not start either, and did not start after a few minutes. Left it on the table while I was preparing to make a return. After I applied for the return the 4th one did start up. Had to cancel the return. Ok all 4 are working and placed where i want them. But, just 2 days later, I happen to be outside after the sun went down and I walked out to where one was placed and could not hear anything. After a couple minutes and still no sound I checked the other 3 --- no sound. They work fine when the sun is out but at night they do not work.

Works really well
Had a huge mole problem/vole problem. I put this device at the end of the walkway considering the diameter it says it will cover, and within a matter of a week or two with a couple of overlapping ones I noticed no more mounds of dirt going through my yard. So apparently it works. Slightly annoying and that the burst of sound every 35 seconds or so is pretty loud but considering it's doing its job I'll take it. Unfortunately the lawn guy is not careful enough to not have knocked it off of its stem, but it did hold up well enough to be placed back on it. I've had it in the ground for almost a year at this point and it is doing its job fabulously. Pretty easy to install I did use a piece of rebar and pounded a hole in the ground so that I wouldn't push on the top as it instructed not to do. And it is definitely deterrent efficient

Probably effective
I've owned about 4 of these over more than 10 years, been through a few design variants. Does it keep gophers away? Probably. My guess is that if a gopher has taken up residence you won't drive it away, in fact you could well get mounds right next to the device and conclude that it's a joke. I'd say it probably works as a wide-area repellent, at least for elite gophers who seek luxurious living quarters, though the low-income bottom-crawling varmints may put up with it (gophers are territorial, so that's a tad more serious than it sounds). Nothing magical about the frequency: it used to be 600-800 Hz, the newer models are about 400 Hz. Lower frequency penetrates better. Older models (10 years ago) ran on 2 AAs rechargeables and had a speaker in the spike, which made sense. And a funky slider switch that didn't work. Newer models run on 1 AA and a pushbutton switch that works well. The speaker is up in the circuit module (the square bit), which doesn't seem to make as much sense but it's LOUD. How loud? The device is lying out on a table in the back yard, and I can hear it in the front yard. I'd even be concerned about disturbing neighbors. Once in the ground, most of the sound dissipates through the dirt and it's not nearly the same level of disturbance. Tips: Wet the dirt well and pre-dig the hole with a metal weeder or other tool, don't use the device as a digger, it's really thin plastic. Mount it so that the circuit module is a couple of inches above the dirt to keep it well clear of runoff water. Other than that, the deeper in the better. Soak the area well again so that the dirt packs in around the spike. Sound travels better through moist clay than dry sand. Right next to a paved area should be good. Sunny of course. Watch for weeds growing and masking the solar panel. It's good to see that Victor is constantly improving the device. Should you buy Victor or the cheap Chinese imitations that Amazon shamelessly promotes? Duh! My most recent device was made in Vietnam but at least it's an American design.

Not sure about them
Honestly don’t know how I feel about these things. Half worked right out of the box and are still working, other half seem to have stopped working after a couple weeks. They get plenty of sun.

Worth it. Solar powered. No more moles!
I love these solar stakes! For the last few years I’ve worked my butt off getting my front yard back in shape where it’s completely full(no bare patches), green, and just back to where it was when we bought our house, but better. In the process of doing all that I discovered mole mounds. I was at my wits end over the moles when I found these solar stakes. The first one I bought from my local store, but they stop stocking and carrying them at a certain time in the year. I’m now doing the same thing I did to my front yard to my back yard and in the process of it discovered the moles recently moved into my back yard. So came on here and bought a solar stake. I love these things. They work! As soon as my stake was delivered I found the perfect spot to put it in my backyard and within a week or so the moles have moved out and the grass is coming in beautifully. They’re pretty sturdy for being plastic, but just keep in mind that they are plastic so there is a breaking point. Follow the directions on the box on how to install it. Find something that’s approximately the same width as the stake to make a pilot hole and it makes it so much easier to put in the ground. I love that they’re solar. No worrying about if the batteries die or having to change batteries. It’s literally ready to go right out of the box. You can put it in the ground and forget about it. Definitely recommend these if you have mole problem.

A pricey temporary solution
They work ok but plan on putting them closer together than suggested and replacing them annually which makes them expensive. UPDATE: All of them stopped working in less than a year so I took a couple of them apart and it turns out they were full of water. There was also rust. In my opinion they seem to be designed to fail.
