It has a small spacer to make up for the control panel protector thickness - if you have one. There are no wires to cut, solder or modify, just plug and play. This is a high quality smooth spinning spinner of which , honestly, the only one that is better is on the original Atari Tempest Arcade Coin-Op. (I know, I own one of those too.) This will make playing Tempest like it should have been from the start. This was so little cost even for both it and the interface board Arcade 1 Up likely could have / should certainly have done this themselves to begin with and likely their sales would have been even higher. It is extremely smooth and has several options for configuring the number of output pulses per revolution (up to 1024). Surprisingly, I didn't see a standard optical encoder wheel and it looks like it might use a magnet in the shaft along with a chip I can't identify right behind the shaft. The included knob fits precisely on the shaft and has a good weight to it. Overall the entire unit is extremely well designed. I'm planning on building a custom USB spinner controller for my PC to play Tempest and so far it has been pretty straightforward. The 4-pin connector pinout is labeled nicely for DIYers and the module takes 5V supply. It interfaced with an Arduino very easily using the UART at 125000 baud, 7N1 settings. I couldn't find any real authoritative information about the comms protocol (and found some contradicting stuff) but I got this working reliably for me. My working prototype just feels so good controlling the Tempest claw!
