Yes, it can replace it if you write the number down everyday. It only holds today and yesterday information, I have been using it without a subscription for 2 years. BUT you need to initially buy the armband new and activate a subscription to get the watch to work. Normally you will get 3to6 months free so this is not an issue. But if you purchase a used unit both this and the armband will be useless. So in short once activated yes you can use this without a subscription or software just to monitor calories burned. There is one more BUT, once your initial subscription runs out DO NOT connect the armband to the computer-or the software will know the subscription is done and lock the armband and watch.I know this is true. I am actually using it this way right now and have since my subscription ran out. I made the mistake of connecting one of my older armbands to the computer after the subscription was out and now the watch wont link to the armband. SO dont forget, once that subscription is up if you hook the Armand to a computer with the bodymedia software it wills shut if down. How to get around this. just take all the software of the computer and the armband will charge. **Q: IS this the display for the Bodymedia Core? The display for the Core only works with Core and Advantage.** A: http://www.bodymedia.com/Shop/Accessories/Display the display works with advantage and the core but not the link. **Q: is there a way to put this on silent?** A: It really doesn't make many sounds. It will make a noise when it is first placed on your arm to let you know it is working. It will make a noise if the connection is lost to let you know you aren't connected. Other than that, any other sound will come from an alarm you set. I don't think there is a way to completely silence the device by turning off the connect/disconnect notifications. **Q: Does this do anything that is not already done with a compatable smartphone?** A: The answer is Yes. Some smartphones have some features but no smartphone has everything this has. Check what's inside the unit and see if all those features are what you need or not? Beware the required online subscription to make it useful. Check out some of the other fitness devices here at Amazon! I found several issues with the display and would not recommend the product at this time. I would hold off until the next revision if there is one. Pros: -Track real time your calorie burn, steps including daily and trip totals, without syncing the arm band to the computer. Great concept. Cons: -Does not stay in sync. -Does not come with watchband and I can't find a place to clip it that it stays in sync and easy to see. (BodyMedia told me all purchases of this display should come with the watch band).I could not find a watchband anywhere to buy separate and found the clip more trouble than it's worth. -Not very accurate. The calories per minute on the display do not match the calories per minute when synced to the computer (looking at the exact same time frame). -It beeps when you press any button and when you hit targets throughout the day. I could not find a way to turn off the beeping and they are loud beeps (disruptive and annoying). Even turning on the light beeps. I gave it two stars because it is a great concept. I like the idea, but not the product and certainly not for $80. Had I spent $10, I would have gotten what I paid for. I find the clip useless and since it will not stay synced no matter where I place it (waistband, sleeve, even on the arm band).
