While my office is relatively quiet, there is still some distant background noise when kids running through house etc. My built-in computer mic, or display mic, always picked up that background noise. I did some simple tests once I got this mic and it seems to do a pretty good job at only picking up my voice and masking the background noise. If it's anything loud it's not that you absolutely won't hear the background noise, but comparing to my built-in omnidirectional mics this does make a big difference. Overall nice quality, heavy base. Plugged USB directly into my macbook pro and worked without any kind of setup. So far so good. The mic sits about 2 feet from my mouth and picks me up just fine. Probably would work better even closer, but I just leave it at the back of my desk behind my monitors with the mic bent under the monitor pointing at my face.
