Simply adjust the die lower in the press a little at a time to get the crimp you want. **Q: Are these Hornady 223 die sets small base dies for 223/5.56 semi auto rifles?** A: A 223/5.56 Die set will load cartridges that will run through a semi auto rifle. And if that is what they are they will work but the photo attached to the question you sent shows they are for a .50 BMG and they will definitely will not load a .223 /5.56 round. I have yet to reload any cartridges with the Hornady 223 Remington set I have but I have run about 80 cartridges though my set resizing them and they worked fairly well. Jason Tillison's Answer listed is correct in the fact that the dies are full length die set. There are resizing dies that only work on the upper part of the cartridge or the neck but the set I bought are the full length set. **Q: Do you need another die to flare out to insert bullet or will this die set flare also** A: Generally speaking, bottlenecked cases do not need flaring to properly seat a bullet. However, SOME bullet designs will deform as they're seated. If you're seeing deformation or shaving as you seat the bullet, first check that you're using the correct diameter bullets. If you find that you DO need to flare the case mouths (it's rare, but it does happen), then I recommend the Lee Universal Expander die. I use it for 22 TCM (the bottlenecked cases have thin throats that deform under seating pressure if I don't). **Q: I can use these dies and shellplate to load 5.56 as well as .223rem correct?** A: Yes you can. The case dimensions are identical between .223 and 5.56mm. The only difference is in the part of the chamber beyond the case mouth. They make a great dues.First, they make the best lock rings. They are split nut type. They are grabbing the threads concentrically. Literally, I buy these for my custom dies too!The FL dies are short enough to bump the shoulder well. They are smooth. The threaded collet can be locked read center. The expander doesn’t pull necks. I do wish they offered some minus expanders, but almost nobody does.The seaters are really concentric and easy to adjust. I actually prefer the Hornady adjustment to a micrometer. It would be nice if they had a longer sliding sleeve.The only thing better are Hornady bushing dies.
