Review: Simple compost bin: looks good and works well - I got this to collect compost inside my home for about a week before taking it outside, and it works really well for that. My AC runs all day, so I have not had any issues with odors or anything decomposing inside. It stays clean and manageable as long as I empty it weekly. It looks nice and the stainless steel feels like good quality. I also like that it fits easily in the kitchen without looking out of place. I clean it every week after taking the compost out, and so far no issues at all.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: fruit flies**
A: We don't have fruit flies, but BRILLIANT idea to insert a round (12-cup size) drip coffee paper filter into the top above the filter. I'm doing that... just in case. With the paper coffee filter, flies can't pass through the paper to get to the carbon filter with all of its nooks & cranniess. Also, if you have a fly problem with this can: 1) definitely suggest emptying the can each week, or even more frequently; 2) You have flies in the house; need to get those window screens repaired.

**Q: will the scraps actually compost in this or must they be moved to a regular compost bin?**
A: Folks, you must really stop and think. IF you know nothing of composting, read up on it! You use food scraps to put in your COMPOSTER in your YARD. This BIN, is used to temporarily store the food scraps until you have enough to take to the composter. where the food scraps break down, compost and turn into dirt. it is magical and you can even stand and watch it happen. However, you might well wear out waiting for it to happen. IF you have a tumbler composter, you can turn food scraps into dirt in 2 weeks otherwise, it will take much longer but the rewards are great. Before composting, we were buying potting soil for the garden to plant the veggies and flowers into. Now, with compost, we only occasionally will purchase fertilizer but stick pretty much to the compost. I am using right now 7 different bins for composting and turn it out rapidly. If you read up on it, you can actually learn and then you will not need to ask some of the questions I have seen in here.
  Good luck!

**Q: how do you change the charcoal filter**
A: I have found two methods that work for me: 1. finger pinch - usually works for the first filter, but not so well for the second and 2. (my favorite) thick end of a chopstick or a thick bar stir stick. I always have a few chopsticks sets laying around and I found that thicker end will not poke a hole in your filters. Just push it through one of the top holes and it will push both filters far enough out so that you can grab them with your hands. For the hot second of annoyance that you might feel about needing extra equipment, it is so worth it! The double filter is a life and nose saver. Trust me! On a side note: I recommend that you pick up a extra set of round filters for every square/circle replacement pack you buy. The bottom (round filter) will need to be replaced more often then the top (square) filter. If the bottom filter gets wet accidentally (usually happens when I over fill the bin), it will mold and FAST. Top filter stays pretty dry, so you will not have to change it as often. Hope this helps and happy composting!

**Q: What number filter does this take?**
A: I bought mine replacement filetr for $3.80 from OurCrazyDeals - Filter 93F

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ This bin is great, unlike some of the reviewers here.
*by S***E on July 23, 2014*

UPDATE - September 2025: I still have this bin and use it daily. It hasn't rusted, broken, or had any other issues. It has been banged on the side of my outdoor compost bin (to get the little bits stuck at the bottom out) probably thousands of times at this point and it's still looking and functioning great. Still 5 stars. - Original review: I have zero complaints about this compost bin, for which reason I am giving it five stars, because that's how Amazon reviews work. However, based a couple of reviews that I'm reading now, I'm guessing that the main reason I'm pleased with this bin (apart from the fact that it performs its intended function perfectly well) is that I actually understand what a compost bin is and what composting involves. Here are some pointers, in case you are new to this: 1. A compost bin is basically just a pot with a lid on it. If you are going to order this thing and then find yourself shocked when you receive what is basically just a pot with a lid on it in the mail (despite the numerous images on this page that clearly show what is basically a pot with a lid on it), then please just go buy a pot and save yourself the trouble of posting a really stupid review on Amazon that blames the product for the fact that you didn't realize what a compost bin was. 2. Composting involves taking your food scraps that would *otherwise be trash* and keeping them in a bucket (or a pot with a lid on it) in your kitchen. For this reason, it will *get dirty*, just like the rest of the items in your kitchen that come in contact with food. You will often have to *wipe it down* to remove the residue of whatever you put in it, *just like everything else in your kitchen*. Don't let the term "compost bin" fool you into thinking that this product has the magical ability to self-clean. Remember that this is basically just a pot with a lid on it. 3. Here's the thing about food scraps: they break down over time. They even break down a bit over the course of a few days. Another word for this breakdown process is "rotting". THIS IS WHY WE COMPOST THEM. If you leave your compost sitting on your counter for a week at a time, *it will start to smell*. DO NOT BLAME THE BIN - get off your lazy rump and go empty the dang thing. Would you keep your trash for a week if it was full of rotting food? NO. Honestly, a bin that will hold a week's worth of scraps isn't a good thing. A compost bin is not a panacea for all compost-related unpleasantness. If you don't want your food scraps smelling on your countertop, but you also refuse to walk allllll the way to your compost bin more than once a week, then maybe composting isn't for you. Which is fine, just don't leave a three star review on Amazon once you figure that out. - Okay, done snarking. Here's what I like about this bin: *It looks good on the countertop *It has a carrying handle, unlike your average pot with a lid on it *It is well-proportioned - tall enough to hold a good amount of stuff without having a huge footprint on the countertop, but not so tall that it tips over *I've had little to no problem with fruit flies, presumably because I have been careful to only remove the lid when I am putting stuff in the bin *It cleans easily *It is durable and unbreakable Basically, it does everything a compost bin should do, assuming you do not have ridiculous, uninformed, and mutually-incompatible expectations for how it will function.
