The book had me in tears of sadness but then joyl. A grown man crying on a sunbed is not a good sight! My partner read it while on holiday and when we returned I bought 2 copies of the paperback to give as presents to friends (something I have never done before). So much did the book affect me, when I was again watching t.v. and someone mentioned a new movie called "Lion" it only took one sentence before I knew it was the film of this book. I bought the DVD and though enjoyable, I urge you to read the book either instead of or as well.The book spends more time with young Saroo lost in Calcutta and that sense of hopelessness for a tiny boy has the reader on edge. The film, to me, skips over this period to get quickly to the adult Saroo and because of that I didn't enjoy it as much. One of the most enjoable reads - ever! ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ A prerequisite before you see the film... *by L***K on Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 20 June 2017* I only give this book a five-star after I saw how the director took this book and transferred into a film which had the most compelling first hour of a film I have ever watched; and I am film goer. LION was everything I hoped it would be in the first hour even if the second hour was badly cast and it disappointed me; I wish the focus had been on the story and not the over-weighted cast. While Dev Petal was appropriate, the way he was directed was over-indulgent; if he would have handled the role more low key to let the story speak for itself that would have been a better way to go; and the rest of the cast again overshadowed the simple storytelling of a most compelling and touching story. The book was so simple in its rendition I was shocked for the language was weak and the story delivery superficial when it was obvious there was so much depth, and potential. But, fortunately a producer or/and a director were able to see beyond the words in the book and transpose the story into film and give the story a new life on the screen; the first hour of LION was some of the best directing and casting I have witnessed in film and there was hardly any speaking/speech which made it even more memorable and heart-rendering. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ I do love a true story whether it has a good or ... *by N***E on Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 8 March 2017* I do love a true story whether it has a good or bad ending ,and this had a good ending.
