The starting point into the series is the Tide of Iron: Next Wave Core Set that includes American and German forces that fought from D-Day across northwest Europe in 1944 - 1945. A game I was afraid of, but which finally rose highly above expectations!

*by J***A on Reviewed in the United States on December 27, 2015*

Before I bought this game, I had many doubts about it, considering I was looking for a mid-level tactical wargame that could scratch the itch of miniature wargames and wargames per sé. Therefore I went to A LOT of reviews and forums asking wheter or not this game was what I was looking for. Most people said it has fiddly components and pretty much inexplicable rules. Others said the scenarios were unbalanced. But then again, there was something this game had which the others in this category didn't: The miniatures... and some gut feeling that screamed to not ignore this guy. I really didn't want to put this game on hold just for that reason, but for the price tag, there seemed to be a lot of better options (Like CoH Awakening the Bear 2nd Edition). Case is: I bought it despise what everyone said. You have to take in account that whatever most reviews say about this game make reference to the old coffin box version, before 1A took care of the license. Now I already played 5 games so far. One in Skirmish mode (See BGG Variants), 1 from the first scenario, and 3 from the second one. I have to say that, even though in those 3 late games (4 players) my friend and I were yankees, the experience was never the same. There was always something different happening, say varied strategies or incredibly tense moments. And I must say, they were all a BLAST. (Played with different players everytime, but there are already 2 rematchs pending of the same mission). If I have to talk about the negatives, I'd say that preparing the game IS fiddly. No lying in that. Probably half an hour with everyone in the table cooperating. That's too much already for a game that goes beyond the hour and a half. My recommendation is to have the armies and tokens perfectly divided and classified in boxes or ziploc bags.Another thing is the Manuals: But don't misunderstand me. Learning the game is not easy at all, considering there are 3 books about it. It's not a simple game neither, so that's expected, and the layout of the three of them is perfectly clear and well done. So what's wrong with it? Finding things. Once you're playing your third game you already know every minutiae of the charts, but sometimes, when resolving some situation (Like Drift), you have to get to certain page of the manual and then you discover it was in the other one, but then you get confused and start revolving pages like some madman 'cause the other players are expecting for your answer. You can look at the index, of course, but sometimes in the heat of the battle you just forget it. After all it's a minor complaint, but sometimes you really notice it.The last point I mentioned before is the scenarios balance. Since 1A took the license, this problem seemed to have disappeared, and although I can't say every scenario is balanced, I can say that the first and second one are perfect, with equal amount of victories and defeats for both sides. I expect it to be a streak with all of them. The Rules: While hard to learn for the first time, later you discover they're perfectly intuitive. I believe I only have to say that in one of my games, I was playing with my dad (53), against my grandpa (70) and my little brother (14), and then I realized that after 10 minutes they were all talking about tactics and possibilities and odds instead of worring about the rules, like they already knew them at perfection. This game is FUN, after all. It offers incredibly cinematic moments and lots of laughs, but it also allows for a LOT of strategic and tactical thinking. Not a brain burner, but pretty close to what I was looking for. The good thing is that ONLY for the Core Set, there are already more than a hundred free scenarios online. Also there is a good amount of variants in BGG (One about zombies, of course), and finally, 1A games released a Fourth Book that allows for Advanced Rules (Like the effect mortar fire has over woods). If you want a Tactical Wargame with Miniatures, with enough complexity to introduce it to first-time gamers, but also a System which you can mod to your taste without hampering the balance, Tide of Iron is the game for you, and I'm glad I listened to my gut and not the reviewers this time.

If you are missing parts good luck getting them replaced

*by J***K on Reviewed in the United States on March 10, 2018*

I am giving this one star because I bought this and the rest of the expatiation's and the main game and 2 of the games are missing pieces. I tried to contact A1 Games and Fantasy Flight Games about replacement parts. It looks like A1 is no longer around and FFG just has not gotten back to me at all so I am giving this one star and telling you if you do buy the games just know if there is a problem you will more than likely not be able to fix it. If I get this fixed I will come back and fix the review of the game.

    Great Board game for WW2

*by A***R on Reviewed in the United States on December 12, 2019*

Great WW2 Board Game to play. The game comes with an easy to follow rule book with some scenarios to play to learn the game. It also comes with a hex map boards of Europe with various terrain tiles and command cards. It also comes with plastic detailed German PZKIV, and Tiger 1 tanks with Stugs, US Shermans and M-10 Tank destroyers. There also are Half tracks both US M-3 and German SDKFZ251 along with lots of plastic infantry pieces with trucks in this game. The game comes with 100 cards and some dice. This is a very fun game to play. You can also get more pieces from the expansion games that go with this game.
