Review: The only flash for me, even If I have to change the batteries more often than most. - 2018 Update (bought in 2015): The bulb is going out its loosing its recycle time and power even if the battery says its ready to fire the bulb doesn't have the power to do it. I've had this for so long tossing it would feel like I'm losing my left ughhh hand. I have to buy another one. I've used this flash every weekend since 2015. It's been with me everywhere and it works on all of my cameras (Nikon, Pentax, Canon, Ricoh, Fuji). Update: I've owned a total of 4 flashes. 2 Neewer, 1 Nikon and 1 Fuji (This one), this one is still alive and kicking out of them all. My nikon has fallen off of a flash stand and broken in two and both of my Neewer flashes bulbs died and now my Fuji has fallen and hit the pavement a total of 10x!!!! OMG and it still works!! This little flash is still going strong! I had to change my review from a 4 to a 5 this think is a mini beast. I've had this flash sonce May 2015. I've used it in studio, for nightclub on location for portraits. And it never fails me the only bad side is the AAA batteries. If they would have made this in AA it would kick ass. It's so small and pocket-able and still very powerful. Ive used it with my fuji x100, Fuji x-t10, nikon d7000, nikon F80 (film camera) and my Pentax P3 (film). Its works with all of my cameras. I plan on buying more because the slave command mode is super easy and the more i have the better. This is really a diamond of a flash. And once you get the familiar with it its super fast to adjust power. Only con is the AAA batteries, you need to carry spare batteries on you.
Review: Small & Adequate before it goes into hibernation mode - Great, convenient size with adequate power for 90% of scenarios. I knew ahead of time that it did not have tilt or bounce, but you can work around this by using a Canon off-shoe cable. Unfortunately, there are two cons: (a) since it uses AAA batteries, don't expect rapid flash recycle after using the flash and (b) when the flash goes into hibernation mode after being idle for a few seconds, the TTL seems to lose the connectivity so you have to turn both the flash and the camera off and or to reestablish the link. Unfortunately, the EF-42 is too big in portion to the X-Pro 1 or the X-E1 for that matter. Hopefully, Fujifilm can fix con (b) with a firmware update.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Can the flash be tilted up to avoid direct glare or reflection?**
A: No, it doesn't tilt. However, it does include an inbuilt diffuser that helps soften the flash, if required.

**Q: I have an x t10. is this flash considerably better than the popup? is it worth it?**
A: This flash is substantially better than any built in flash for two reasons: 1. Power. It's significantly more powerful. and 2. Manual controls. You have much more artistic freedom with this flash, able to choose settings rather than pick a mode in camera.

**Q: Is it compatible with XT100?**
A: Yes, it will work with any fuji hot shoe mount.

**Q: Does fujifilm ef-x20 flash work with fujifilm xe4?**
A: Yes it does!

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Perfect match for the X100S
*by I***R on April 12, 2013*

I had a GN50 flash that took four AAs for my Olympus Pen E-P1 (the Promaster 7500EDF) and I was a little concerned that I'd be disappointed with the EF-X20. It doesn't bounce, uses AAAs, and I feared it might have the same chintzy build quality and weak output as the EF-20 (aka Sunpak RD2000). But that's not the case. It has a metal shell with a rubberized plastic underbelly, and it oozes quality. Like the X-series cameras it's made in Japan (presumably by Fuji) and shares a satisfying clicky dial for both manual exposure and exposure compensation for TTL. It also comes with a soft leatherette case. An extremely compact stand with a plastic tripod thread comes with it for off-camera use. While Fuji dosn't have a wireless control scheme for this purpose, having a stand and being able to literally dial in the output is both satisfying and useful for creative work. When it's actually on the camera, things are even better. Fuji has been known for several years to use a very light touch with flash, and that extends to this unit as well. Most often it will fire on very low power, just enough to fill in the shadows without making it look like a flash shot, and it doesn't visibly preflash. The only time it will use full power is as a hail mary into the abyss -- I lit up a pond in a city park with it, as well as the buildings across the way. Because it uses such lower power for the most part, it's not as slow as it ought to be, though I don't know how battery life will be til I've broken in the NiMHes I bought for the purpose. So far the only peculiarities I've noted: The test button may fire at full power regardless of manual setting. Not always, but sometimes -- don't know if it's firmware or a quirk of this particular unit. And the slave setting is on the bottom of the unit, so if you forget to switch it properly, you have to remove the unit to set it right. I'd have preferred a slide switch for the power, but I'll manage; at least shutting the camera off will shut off the flash with it. For a flashgun I can hide in my fist, it's top notch, and produces lovely output that I could never coax out of the Promaster without bounce and a lot of fiddling. Recommended.
