The rear light functions well, but uses non-mainstream batteries similar to those that are used in car door openers.The head light is very dim, and you can barely see the light on the pavement when there is any ambient light present. My mistake was to buy this product based on the manufacturer description, since there were no posted reviews. The headlight is easily useable as a flashlight on its own. I've been using mine for at least a year (bicycling at night occasionally, riding a few biking vacations --anywhere from a few days to a few weeks, and camping). I don't recall ever even having to replace the batteries yet, though I suppose I might have done so some time in the last year without thinking much about it. The light is bright enough for me. (I don't expect it to illuminate the road well, so much as to let people know I'm there. If you want to illuminate the road well, you need to spend at least two or three times as much on your light. You just can't do it with a cheap light.) And I love the mounting system. It's actually very simple, but it's not obvious how it works. This means I never have to take the light off of my handlebar mount in order to avoid having it stolen (though it's simple & quick to do so if I want to). Thieves can't figure out how to get it off! Although the mount IS made of plastic and could be broken if someone really wants to take the light, so far I've not had mine bothered, despite leaving it in place in high visibility, high traffic areas where you might expect some vandalism. (I have had other much more easily detachable accessories stolen from my bicycles in the past. Let's face it, who wants to take everything off your bike every time you park it during a month-long bike trip? It's too much hassle if you can avoid it by getting a good mounting system like this one.) Anyway, the mount is also strong, reliable and easily adjustable enough to always point the light where I want it. I've had too many other headlights that slowly (or quickly) move every time the bike hits a pothole. I haven't bought this particular combination kit before, so I can't comment on the taillight.
