I have no idea about the range, but the black battery box that hangs off to the side has a cable attached to the part that inserts into the chamber. you push it in with you finger while the rifle is held in position on a bench. if you try and hold it free hand, the cable is going to wobble, and the will make the laser wobble, and...well I think you see where I'm going. I guess you could try and rig something up, but I don't think there would be any consistent accuracy. this is a laser boresighter, for setting up a scope. it is not trigger activated. think of using a sword in an archery contest. **Q: will this work in my glock 23? 9mm** A: No it will not, a glock 23 is a 40 s&w bullet, unless you converted it to a 9mm with a barrel swap and this product still wont work in a 9mm **Q: Will this work for a .22 magnum?** A: The laser bore sight itself is shaped just like a .22LR and extracts when you cycle the bolt via the extractor. So if the only length/dimension difference is forward of battery....I would think it should. Hope that helps. The first one I got was used and broken. It looked like they accidentally let the breech close on the wire. It should always be locked back when using. This bore sight gets you very close and to zeroing. It sits a bit loose in the bore, which requires holding it centered in the bore.
