## Description

desertcart.com When it's time to gaze at the stars or take in some long-distance or low-light terrain viewing, look no further than the Celestron 71018 SkyMaster 20 x 80 binoculars. Featuring high quality BAK-4 prisms, multi-coated optics for enhanced contrast, a diopter adjustment for fine focusing, and large apertures, these binoculars offer phenomenal performance. The Celestron 71018 features a 20x magnification and an objective lens diameter of 80 millimeters, giving it a 4-millimeter exit pupil. (The exit pupil size -- the diameter of the objective lens divided by the magnification -- determines the amount of light available to your eye. The larger the exit pupil, the brighter the image obtained will be. A three-millimeter exit pupil is generally sufficient for daytime use, five-millimeters is suitable for daytime and twilight, and seven-millimeters is generally necessary for maximum nighttime or astronomy use.) The Celestron 71018 also includes an integrated tripod adapter rod, a deluxe padded soft carrying case, and Celestron's No Fault Limited Lifetime Warranty. What's in the Box Celestron 71018 Binoculars and deluxe padded soft carrying case Product Description Celestron has designed and engineered the largest SkyMaster models to meet the special demands of extended astronomical or terrestrial viewing sessions. Our large aperture powerful binoculars ensure high performance in all weather conditions and are ideal for astronomical viewing, or terrestrial use. Due to its size and weight—including its very large objective lenses—this binocular should be mounted on a standard photographic tripod for extended periods of use. We’ve included an integrated tripod adapter rod that allows you to mount your SkyMaster binoculars on any sturdy ¼”-20 photographic tripod in seconds. Astronomers have praised the Celestron SkyMaster for decades for its high-quality BaK-4 prisms and multi-coated optics, which enhance contrast and bring out bright, sharp images—especially in low light conditions. The binocular features soft, comfortable rubber eyecups that block stray light. Eyeglass wearers can fold down the eyecups and view with their eyeglasses on. For maximum stability and secure optical alignment, the 80mm SkyMaster model features enhanced structural reinforcement to the main binocular body. Your purchase of the Celestron SkyMaster 20x80 binoculars includes the built-in tripod adapter, objective lens caps, a rainguard, a deluxe carrying case, a neck strap, a lens cloth, and an instruction manual. Buy with confidence from the world’s No.1 telescope brand and a leading binocular manufacturer, based in California since 1960.

Review: RECAPP about Collimation - When I received it the collimation was off. Rather than send it back and risk getting another pair that was off, I called Celestron. The "Life Time No Fault Warranty" only applies if you get it from an "authorized" dealer even though my pair was new. Which means you need to pay like $200+ for these to actually have a warranty. However I asked if I could collimate it myself even though the manual says it should only be done by a professional with specialized tools. They could not or would not tell me anything about how to collimate it. Luckily I did find some general instructions on the web and found the prism tilt screws to turn and got it perfect. You need to gently pry back the edge of the rubber hand grips to access the screws. The whole process wasn't even that difficult! I don't know why it has to be such a state secret with Celestron. Since then the binos have been wonderful and well worth the discount of buying from an "unauthorized dealer". Thank you, Gary, for your tip about collimating. These binoculars were terrible when I first looked through them, and nothing I could do would solve the problem. (My eyes could not focus together and I saw double images.) The barrels appeared to be misaligned, and I was going to send them back. Then I read Gary's review (Collimation Easily Done) and thought, "What the heck? I can at least try." I followed Gary's instructions and easily fixed the problem within minutes. They work really well now, but I'm giving them a four-star rating since Celestron really should tell the consumers how to fix this problem by themselves without having to pay someone else to do it. To add to Gary's tip: You'll need a tiny flat-head screwdriver (like what you use to repair eyeglasses) in order to adjust them. The hand grip (that portion on the top of each barrel of the binoculars) only needs to be pulled back a little ways until the screw is exposed, and you only need to adjust the side that's off. (It should be obvious which side is off or if both sides are off. Close your left eye and then your right while looking through the binoculars.) Check the binoculars (by looking through them) each time you make an adjustment until you have it perfect. It can be done, and it's well worth it! Thanks to all who responded for your kind advice. I experimented after all and found it incredibly easy to collimate the Celestron Skymaster 20X80. By carefully peeling away the rubber lining on the handgrips from the top, nearest the focussing wheel, the collimation screws are revealed at about 11 o' clock and 1 o' clock. I then mounted the binos on a tripod and focused on a bright star (it happened to be Achernar) and while looking through the binoculars, made minute adjustments on the screws until the images through the two lenses merged and voila! For the first time I could clearly see the four moons of Jupiter in perfect focus through these binos!
Review: Having a great time with these - I love these binoculars so much. I had a couple of telescopes. One was too heavy, and the other one was smaller but had a computerized system that I am shamed to say was too complicated for me to use. That is, I felt so intimidated by it, I never used it, and then I sold it. These binoculars are awesome because you can just pic them up and take them outside and do some star gazing. The only set up is putting them on a tripod, which is what O do, or you could just sit at a table or something and lean your elbows on the surface to prevent shaking. It’s easy peasy, and you can do it spontaneously. Also, I could bring them on a plane if I wanted, which is what I would like to do when I go visit my sister in New Mexico. I couldn’t do that with something bigger. These certainly can’t do what a big, fancy telescope could do. But I can see a whole lot more than I can see with my naked eye, and I am looking forward to using them more frequently to push their limits. I like Celestron products. I bought a smaller pair of binoculars from them years ago, and then have my wife some as a gift because O liked them so much. I didn’t really consider other brands when I bought this pair. It’s just a really good value for the money. Highly recommend for other Star gazers and people who hope to see a beautiful landscape in more detail. It’s not like having your own observatory, but it’s pretty awesome.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: I am trying to decide between this model and the Celestron 25-125x80 which i would use at only the lower magnifications. Which should I get?**
A: Hello! In my 50+ years as a user of hundreds of types of lenses, telescopes and binoculars I have found any "ZOOM" product is far less sharp than a fixed millimeter group of lenses. I currently purchased the Celestron 25 X 100 astronomy binoculars and could not be more pleased. Images are all very sharp with excellent contrast - both of which are extremely important when looking at the night sky as well as in terrestrial viewing. I would definitely recommend the 25 X 100 binocs. Hope this helped. Terry D

**Q: Would I be able to see the rings of Saturn with the binocs?**
A: Just got these in yesterday from another retailer and yes if your steady enough or use tripod you can see saturn's rings. You can see the brightest of jupiters 4 moons as star points too. I also got great views of the Orion Nebula (M42) which was amazing. All objects mention above where seen from the city.

**Q: With this pair not having focus or zoom lever, would the 25-125x80 be a better pair for astronomy searching?**
A: I own the zoom model 25-125×80, and now I wish I had 25 x 100.

Please DONT BE FOOL BY THE ZOOM FUNCTIONILITY. 25 x 100 will definitely give you crisp image because its prime lens. My zoom bino has some soft-image problem at the edges and it seems to be very common issue.

Zoom is just useless. 100 aperture will give you more light and 25x is enough to see planets and stars. Again, having individual focus ring is better that you wont get in 25-125x80 model.

**Q: Are these suitable for bird watching? Specificaly birds of prey?**
A: No, not at all they are like hand holding a celestial telescope. If rested on a car roof they might work, but they are annoyingly large for transport. They require a tripod and good for the viewing of a fixed object like a pack of wolves at Yellowstone 1 mile out. This much power and the binocular view is just too bouncy. The best bird watchers / NASCAR watching for the money I purchased were the Vortex diamondback 8X42. Waterproof and very clear glass, great in low light and not terribly expensive compared to the competition in this performance range. Don't get me wrong as they are a nice addition for sky watching the moon, rings on Saturn...., but practical for bird watching no.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Mine arrived on time and I found them to be well collimated (aligned) If you take care not to bang them around or drop them they
*by K***T on January 2, 2016*

I read through most of the reviews here and in other online forums and here is my take on all of it. The guys in the dedicated astronomy forums are going to tell you these binoculars are junk but then they are also going to suggest that what you really need is something you might have to take a second mortgage out on your home to buy. What this product is - an $89 pair of Chinese binoculars - you should obviously be aware of and I give it four stars because you can't beat the price with a stick. Mine arrived on time and I found them to be well collimated (aligned) If you take care not to bang them around or drop them they should stay that way but it is fairly easy to do a decent conditional collimation on them if necessary, instructions on how to do that can be found online with a Google search. The advantages of these over a telescope is that they can easily be used for terrestrial viewing as well as star gazing. The disadvantages are that they are pretty big and heavy and with 20x magnification you really need to use a tripod but viewing any celestial object higher than about 30 degrees above the horizon with a tripod is going to be rather uncomfortable due to the angle. This is why telescopes have that 45 or 90 degree eyepiece..I also found that with 20x the field of view is pretty narrow to the point that you almost need a spotting scope to get these things aimed at what you want to see. When looking at the moon for instance you are going to physically see it moving across the field of view like the second hand of a clock. For this reason I ordered a heavy duty Celestron alt/azim tripod with slow motion controls because a light weight aluminum camera tripod is not quite up to the task of supporting these monsters. Funny but the tripod cost ten bucks more than the binoculars. So far I have used these to see amazing details on a rising late night half Moon, the moons around Jupiter, the Orion Nebula, Seven Sisters and a few other things. This was from my back yard with quite a bit of light pollution so I wasn't able to find Andromeda galaxy but I'm sure in a dark space I'll be able to get a stunning view. They are also good for terrestrial viewing and especially at night, they bring in a lot of light but you can't focus on anything closer than maybe 100 yards or so. So if you think you're maybe interested in astronomy I'd recommend these binoculars. I can understand Celestron's philosophy in offering such an inexpensive product, kind of like a gateway drug. You'll certainly want to upgrade in the future but it's better than spending $500 on a telescope and then discovering that meh, you're not really into it and it just sits in the corner taking up space in the spare bedroom next to the jogging machine with all the dirty laundry hanging on it.
