Experiencing radial discomfort outside of my left knee, I was soon unable to run without experiencing excruciating pain. I finished the race thinking I had injured my knee when, in fact, I had strained my Iliotibial (or IT) band. For those unfamiliar, the IT band is a wide tendon or "fascia" responsible for raising the leg up and down. It extends from outside of the pelvis and down the leg to a point behind the knee. When it gets strained, it tightens up significantly, compressing nerves on the side of the leg - leading to pain outside of the knee.To continue my training, I needed a solution and found it in this adjustable strap. It relieved the pressure on the band, allowing it to heal while I was able to continue running (albeit at a more moderate pace). In about three months - while continuing to run - I was able to increase my distance to where it had been. As a result, I was able to run three marathons in 2014 and one half-marathon due to the relief the band gave me. If you have ever experienced this injury - or want to use it to prevent one - I would highly recommend this product. The only drawback is that, for someone who runs 20-30 miles per week, it is effective for only about 3 months.
