Never have I seen an author put all the whats, whys and hows together so succinctly for what I think can be very complex subject matter. The included demonstrations of the children's copying abilities before and after motor therapy by Joye Newman was profound and one of the best takeaways from this book. It makes it clear how movement and other skills correlate. I wish I had this book 4 years ago when my son was misdiagnosed with an ASD at age 4. It's so clear now that he is not on the spectrum, but he did have motor planning and sensory processing issues which kept him from proper sequential development. This book clarified the specific technical issues that we were experiencing without being overly clinical. Our whole family really enjoys the fun activities which account for about half of the book volume. Both my 4 y.o. and 8 y.o. beg to do them. To them they are like party games, but I can tell their minds and muscles are thinking, processing and acquiring skills. I think this book has broad use. I recommend this book highly to all parents of young children to use as a guide in watching and enhancing their child's development. Each activity gives a "what to look for" section for each exercise that could help in identifying kids that may need closer examination or outside therapy. I would also recommend it to parents of older children who may have skipped developmental milestones and are now experiencing academic or social problems. I think this book would also be great for occupational or other therapists for kids. It's a true eye opener. I suspect this book will attain classic parenting-book status in time. My 8 yr old boy's sensory needs have changed drastically in the past yr and I have been trying to find ways to meet his sensory seeking needs. This book contains exercises/activities that can be done at home and with minimal equipment to meet various sensory needs. I like that they break it down into which specific sensory needs each activity addresses and how to adapt and/or add more challenge as the child's needs/skills change. It also covers a large age-range and beginner-advanced activities. We homeschool and adding selected exercises from this book to our daily routine has made such a difference! The book is a very easy read, I read it in less than 2 days. It gives just a brief explanation on a few sensory areas (vestibular, motor planning, etc) but fails to include all sensory areas such as auditory, visual, oral motor. It lists many, many sensory activities that you can easily do at home without buying anything special. I work with kids under 3 so there were only a few activities listed for 2-3 year olds. (Most of them I already use in my Occupational Therapy sessions.) This would be good for a new therapist entering the field working with sensory kiddos and I plan to let the families I work with borrow it for a better understanding of the sensory world. It would be a great book for a parent with its friendly terms, easy reading and lots of activities that will grow with the child.
