I purchased 4 of these calculators for my nieces and nephews who are in grades 5 -10. (The younger one is really good at math.) In my experience as a high school math teacher the students either get:!. A graphing calculator like Texas Instruments Silver Edition. This is a tremendous calculator, and every high school math student should eventually have one (or a similar graphing calculator) but for many courses it is overkill. For business courses, chemistry, physics, and lower math courses that do not involve complicated graphing, the Casio is a better choice. Also, some standardized tests allow calculators but not graphing calculators, The student should be familiar with a basic calculator, and probably should carry the Casio as a backup even when a graphing calculator is permitted.2. A Texas Instruments product in the same price range as the Casio. The Texas Instruments tool is excellent, but I find that the Casio is a better choice. The fact that the entries for the last problem remain on the screen after hitting "=" is a major plus. The editing is easy, and the treatment of fractional exponents is superior in the Casio. Both do a fine job of handling logarithms and trig functions.Disclaimer #1 I was using aTI-30XA for comparison purposes. (As a said before, a very good buy.)Disclaimer #2 I also gave the relatives a $1.00 Scientific Calculator from Dollar Tree.. I told them that they should experiment with this machine, and perhaps take it apart to see what is inside. This machine is very capable of solving most that the problems that can be solved with the more expensive tools. However, I found the keyboard much more confining, and I questioned (without any data) how long the batteries would last..My conclusion : Buy a Casio in elementary or junior high school and buy a T. I didn't expect a protective cover like on higher end models. I really appreciated how this can recall and edit equations and do vector statistical calculations (though only single vector). I didn't expect those either. I had wanted the basic trigonometric, logarithmic, and exponential functions, so everything else was a bonus. And they actually proved useful for my class. I definitely wanted to avoid the very complicated versions that would require referencing a user's manual, hunting over 50+ tiny buttons, or fumbling with multiple, special shift/alt keys to execute a secondary/tertiary function; the last thing I need to do while taking a test.The solar power and battery backup are also nice features.I would definitely recommend this as an entry to mid level calculator.
