Not your typical Baby Book *by L***E on Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on May 2, 2013* I first saw this journal in a ridiculously cute stationary boutique in Vancouver and was hoping to find it again here on Amazon. I'm so glad they offer it here and of course at a very reasonable price! This journal is a must-have for new parents! As a mother of two, I'm always looking for unique parenting gifts and thoughtful parenting books. This one fits the bill! I know I will be purchasing this for future baby shower gifts. It's also pretty hard to find at the big box bookstore, so you can be sure (for the time being) that your gift will stand out!Why I love this book:1) Watercolor style illustrations are quirky and funny! Many of them made me giggle at just being random (cat in a knitted sweater, Bee Gee's guy, Daddy picking baby up by his head). It's not your typical "babyish" kind of pictures or clip art.2) List format. I love that this "journal" poses a topic and then provides lines for you to list ideas. It's not as overwhelming as most traditional parenting journals. I have another baby book that has gone neglected because it just demands a lot of "work." I can see myself jotting down ideas and writing a few words here and there in this book since it's in a list format.3) Topics and subject matter are unique and thoughtful. You're going to find fun topics in here that aren't in other Baby Books. It'll get you and your spouse talking/laughing about some of these. You won't find some of these in other Baby Books (A List of Personality Traits I Aspire To Have As a Parent, A List of Lies and Imaginary Tales You Invented, A List of Things You Destroyed, List of Your Talents, List of Funny Things You Said, Places I Hope To Take You Someday)4) Each journaling/list page is accompanied with an illustration. The illustration side has plenty of space if you want to doodle in it yourself and add little pictures and personal touches for your children.5) There's a section in the back for jotting down "Firsts" - First Tooth, Laugh, Toy, Food, etc. with a line for the "Age" it happened. So if you want some of the traditional Baby Book stuff... it's there as well.6) Book has a ribbon for placeholder (just a nice little touch) - And though it's not spiral bound, the journal does lay flat for writing with a little pressure.Cons:Just a minor complaint that although there are a few pages left blank so you can insert your own photos, it would have been really nice to have a few pockets or something to keep photos/memorabilia. This is personal preference thing, and I know it kind of changes the "low maintenance" feature of the book. I have a thing for journals and pockets, but no stars deducted!This author has a website/blog as well as a whole series of other Listography books that are just as beautiful and thoughtful. If you like her style, definitely check them out! I like that as things occur I can go to this book at the end of the day and just pop in a sentence or two. Nothing too major or involved, I don't feel most memory books are very realistic. How often do you really go in with all those stickers and washi tape? I don't know, that's just not me. I really like that this gets me thinking, too. It jogs my memory for fun moments I've had in the past with my child. This is just as much an heirloom for me as it is for my child. Was sad to see the very first entry is 'a list of names *we* considered for you'. I am a single parent & I alone chose my son's name, so the book immediately became irrelevant to me. Oddly, many other entries are singular instead of plural...not sure why the difference.
