The one bad thing is that my other pens have smooth contours for holding AS a pen, but this has a flange edge that is not as comfortable to hold. The pen is also a tad heavy. Update 03NOV2016: As others have reported, the pen ships with a CHEAP cartridge. Mine leaked a bit from the front a bit earlier and now has gushed out the back. The overall pen is still good, but I need a new cartridge to use it AS A PEN. As a flashlight ... I was very surprised at how bright the light was when I slowly turned the top of the pen the first time while looking into the light, but this is nowhere near as bright as my 1000 lumen tactical light which is ONLY a flashlight and only a little bigger than my pen. Therefore, you're not going to be able use the light as a disorienting/blinding weapon the way you can with a tac light. This pen is perhaps 30lumens and is useful in a dark room for navigating around kid toys and the like while heading for bed or I just used it the other night holding it in my mouth so I could see under the hood of my car to do a jump start with the jump box I had. If I wore hats, this would have handily clipped to the brim of my hat to function as a headlamp. As a glass breaker ... I have little doubt that I could break a window with this if I struck the right spot. Windows are expensive though so I won't be testing this in the foreseeable future. I did need to deflate a plastic milk carton so that it would take up less space in the trash (er, recycle bin) so I did take the opportunity to stab it forcefully with this pen. The dull shape of the pen caused the pen to just bounce back at me until I took a more serious second swing and pierced through the carton up to my hand thereby leaving a satisfying half-inch, round hole behind. The pen shows no signs of wear from this; no mar, scratch, etc. Overall, I think this is my favourite pen. The Hoffman-Richter Stinger is better contoured, but is JUST a pen / kubotan. This pen has a better glassbreaker tip, a "DNA harvester" crown (that isn't so sharp that I self-harvest while putting my thumb there while stabbing cartons with the glassbreaker end), and a short range use flashlight. It also has nice knurled patches for a non-slip grip. I didn't find that the clip got in the way when holding as a striking weapon, but that all depends on how it is held. The clip definitely sticks out more than any other pen. For the price, this is excellent. You CAN spend over $100 for pens like this, but that is silly. I just might buy a couple more of these as gifts. Review: Well made, exactly what I expected, a good choice - I received my pen today and I have to say that, thus far, I have been very pleased with it. I originally purchased it to carry with me as a volunteer EMS worker, as the device allows me to have a pen, a light and a means of defense should the need arise, all in one. Although I have not (thank God!) yet had to use either the glass breaker or the DNA catcher, I can speak as to the quality and design of the pen itself. The pen feels sturdy, and the weight is decently balanced when using it as a writing implement, or using the light. The light is bright and would provide a focused beam that I believe would be a deterrent if shined directly into someone's eyes. (You only "flick" the light quickly past someone's eyes to test pupil response - no worries!) The construction seems very solid, and I believe would provide an effective weapon if either side were used with both vigor and intent to defend oneself, or another person. The pen has written well, and the fact that it uses standard Parker style ink cartridges is a plus. The only disappointing thing about it, thus far, has been the fact that it does not appear to be made in the USA. A small point, perhaps, but that would have made it even better, for me. All that being said, the device takes some practice to use smoothly and effectively. Familiarize yourself with how to turn the light on and off (the top bevel that is the DNA catcher turns) and with how the pen feels in your hand while writing with it and not, before you suddenly have to use it in an emergency. The pen has good wight, but it feels cheaply made. One of the reasons that sold me and made me get this pen was the flashlight function, but was not impressed. It works when it wants too. To turn on the flashlight you need to unscrew the flashlight head a little bit and sometimes it doesn't work. I have other pen type flashlights that are better at this and to turn them on you just need to press the LED down. I think that us a better design that this one. One thing I did like was how smooth the writing is, but it doesn't write good at angles. I thought it was a compressed ink cartridge, but it is not. Overall it's an ok pen with extra features that don't stand out.
