No it doesn't smell or leave an oder. I do place down a sheet or towel to prevent any spray from getting on the surfaces nearby. but after you spray up everything for quilting, you need to start sewing otherwise it loses it sticking ability. The more you manipulate the quilt, the glue loses its sticking ability too. To keep things all together, I would also use pins in the far reaching area that you will work on later to prevent the quilt from separating. It does not leave glue on the sewing needle. Its a great product especially for small quilting projects. I would highly recommend.
