Now it's been nearly a year and I have to update my review and downgrade my rating. Problems that I had over time:-The battery level was rarely displayed accurately. In my original review I wrote that I could read an hour and lose only 1-3% of battery. What I realized over time was that the battery would display as fuller than it actually was until the battery got down to about the final 30% of power, and then that would disappear completely in less than an hour. It also became clear that just after it booted up it would show a higher battery level than it really had. The level would steadily decrease for the first 15 to 20 minutes, and then eventually regulate down a level that it would hold for a while. Or so it seemed. Honestly it was really difficult to trust what it displayed as the remaining battery life. I started getting uncomfortable taking it out of the house with anything less than a full charge because it changed so erratically even when I used it conservatively.- The thing stopped working after about 6 months. Just woke up one morning and couldn't get past the screensaver. The light would turn on showing it had battery, but it did nothing else. I did a manual reset and everything Onyx tech support told me to (after a two week long run around via email), but nothing fixed it. Eventually they asked me to send them a picture of the device booted on so they could see it, which I did. I got the image emailed back to me with a few circles around things on the screen with them declaring physical damage which is not covered under warranty. But the thing had no physical damage. The circles of "damage" that they claimed showed literally nothing other than a normal unblemished section screen. There is not a nick or a scratch on this thing. It was kept in a protective carrier, never dropped, never exposed to water, etc. So I contested this claim, and my only option from there was to send the item to them in Poland so they could inspect it in person. I didn't get a confirmation of receipt of the item, or any communication from them for months. They are holding to their physical damage claim despite the fact that the thing was babied and never received any damage. 6 months later I finally received the thing back in the mail. Just in time for my 2 year extended warranty that I purchased for $5 to kick in. Which is great, because otherwise this would have been a complete waste of $129. In short, this had promise at the start, but it turned out to be unreliable junk.Original review:I bought this device 3 weeks ago because this is an ereader with expandable memory like a Kobo, but with the android system which allows you to install such apps as Kindle and pocket. So I could read my kindle books (without having to transfer everything through Calibre), pocket articles and all my epubs on the same device, which is exactly the type of ereader I had been hoping that someone out there would make.Though there are a number of things about the AG2 that I really like, it is by no means a perfect device. Really my review should be 3 and a half stars, but there is no option for a half star. I rounded up to be generous, but as I write this I am rethinking that. Anyhow,Things I like:-Obviously the ability to read my kindle and epub files on the same device is ideal-It is super lightweight. My husband's paperwhite feels like a brick in comparison.-Page turning buttons!-There's a little indented lip around the edge of the device that makes holding it for long periods really nice... my fingertips just fit right into the lip so I can hold it without any effort yet it doesn't feel like it's going to slide out of my hands.-The backlight is even and fully adjustable, and can be turned off completely by holding down the little button under the screen (which also serves as a 'back' button). One of the things I dislike about the Kindle is that you can't just shut the light off. Even when down all the way there is still a small glow. Kobo's ability to completely turn the light off is probably one of the reasons it has superior battery life to a Kindle.Things that are less than awesome but not dealbreakers:- When reading books using the kindle app, the page turn buttons will not work. You must do a swipe motion, and then there is a weird jump of the text on the page, where all the words start off way off the side, but then center itself. This happens every single page swipe but resolves itself pretty quickly. It's maybe a half a second between the page swipe, the misplaced text and then seeing a normal page. At first I found it really irritating, but did manage to read a full book in the Kindle app where I just stopped noticing it. It's not ideal and probably a lot of people wouldn't be able to get past that. I guess it comes down to how badly you want a device that will read your Kindle books, but also do a lot of things that a Kindle won't do.-The customization/management setting options are kind of limited.-The text in some of the apps (such as Moon+ reader) when on the default font is super light and difficult to read, even when you turn on bolding. What I did to fix that was choose a different font that was just heavier, then added on the bold options and it made the text super dark and readable.Things I greatly dislike:-The built in book reading programs do not work. These are the OReader, the FBreader, the Onyx Neo Reader and the OnyxReader. I don't know why they need so many and you can't remove them (I guess unless you root the device, which is something I have never done before). Onyx Neo and OnyxReader won't open most of the 400 epubs I have on the device. I have been able to get a few epubs open in Onyx Neo, but that app keeps the menu bar up on top the whole time you read, plus an annoying, unhelpful info bar at the bottom. So I won't use it even for the few files it will recognize. FBreader opens about half of my epubs, and gives a decent reading experience, but if I can't trust that I can open any epub I upload then I really have no interest in using it. OReader gives me an "OReader has stopped" error every single time. It literally will not open a single thing, regardless of format. And the lack of info given in the error messages is infuriating. It doesn't say if there is a problem with the file itself, or low memory, or whatever, just that the app has stopped. This really frustrated me and had me considering sending the device back right away.But what I ended up doing is downloading Moon+ Reader pro and set it as my default and it opens everything and reads beautifully. But I want those other useless programs gone.-The battery life is definitely exaggerated. Looking through the library, switching between apps and keeping the wi-fi on will drain the battery in about the same time as a traditional tablet (which is to say that with heavy use you could drain the whole thing in a single day). This is even with the power management settings at the most conservative. When the wifi is turned off and you're just going straight into a book and reading, it improves dramatically, but I still don't know if it would go a full 2 weeks as other reviewers have claimed. Then again I am a heavy reader, so someone who reads less than I do could probably stretch it for that long. Moon+ reader displays battery life and I can read for a full hour with the light on low and only lose about 1% to 3% of battery during that time, which doesn't seem too bad. But it's nothing like the Kobo or Kindle where you can basically forget to charge it for weeks and still be able to power it up and read.These last two things were almost dealbreakers, but it is such a nice, lightweight device that feels so good in my hand that I keep going back and forth in my mind about trading in for something different. Especially now that I have it set up to work smoothly without the issues I encountered in the beginning.All in all, it's a decent ereader once it is set up to circumvent the crappy built-in reader apps and the text is adjusted. But if you're not willing to play with the settings a bit for the first week or two, then it's probably just going to frustrate you and you might as well go with a Kindle or a Kobo. ### ⭐⭐⭐ More useful that other e-readers. *by K***Y on Reviewed in the United States on July 27, 2015* Great battery life, like that I can use Amazon & Nook books (use Google Play to get the apps). Worked for a little while but then the audio jack has just stopped working so taking away a couple stars. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ This thing is not perfect, but it's the best e-ink tablet out there *by J***S on Reviewed in the United States on January 20, 2015* I agree with previous reviewers. This thing is not perfect, but it's the best e-ink tablet out there. The software (particularly for pdfs and reading) is great. It's open and can install any Android App. The frontlight is really nice and even and the eink screen is soft on the eyes. There are downsides such as the low refresh rate and the rare difficulty seeing some things on the screen, but this is due to the e-ink technology and is a tradeoff I'm willing to take at this price point. On a more expensive device, I'm not sure I could deal with the slow refresh rate.
