I don't think it is water proof so would not recommend leaving it outside as the wood may swell and rot. You could take it out on a sunny day and then take it back in. This is my opinion and not of the manufacturer.

Can you buy replacement rope covered scratch posts for this, I expect my cats will need it and this item is too expensive to replace the whole thing?

You can easily replace the rope on any scratching post. The rope is available on Amazon and you’ll need a hot glue gun too

You can buy replacement sissal rope. My cat made light work or original as grew stronger. I secured it to the tube with hot glue and occasional tacks. Its held up very well so far, not sure how it would hold up later on to another set of nails as essentially its just a thick toilet tube.
