The excess material allows it to be slipped over the mattress or removed without much issue. I would still recommend a little help as it can be difficult to do alone, but is not overly difficult to the point it would prevent a single person from using it. I can't say whether it's waterproof, but I know it's water resistant. As I recently spilled a drink and it was a breeze to clean up. Although it didn't sit for any real amount of time. It created a small puddle which I was able to promptly soak up. It also had a nice long zipper which made it easier to insert it over the mattress.Overall, I am very happy with this purchase and would buy it again.
