Nightwing - Kindle edition by Smith, Martin Cruz. Download it once and read it on your Kindle device, PC, phones or tablets. Use features like bookmarks, note taking and highlighting while reading Nightwing. Review: Fabulous Writing! - We’ve spent many wonderful weeks camping in the “Four Corners “ area of the Western states (Indigenous Reservations!) I could visualize this setting so clearly and the characters were So well developed. I don’t know how Smith can write so realistically about Russian life and then the American West. Excellent book! I absolutely recommend it! Review: Good Book - I bought this after reading Gorki Park by this author. This is a very good book. I've enjoyed this author.

Very early Martin Cruz Smith
I liked the original premise and thriller aspects. However, this is nothing like his later books, notably including the Arkady Renko series, and Rose. Characters are more shallow and the literary level is prosaic. His masterpieces are Gorky Park and Red Square which are brilliant, both as literature and highly original detective thrillers.

Masterful, early Cruz smith
Brilliant, early Smith. I avoid this book for decades because it was about swarms of bats, thought it would be cheesy and ridiculous. It is a smart, insightful novel that explores cultural relationships not only between western society and native Americans, but delves deeper between two tribes, dispelling the misconception that They are a monolithic structure with the same history and future. In this novel Cruz Smith brings us back to the area he covered in Stallions Gate, which was set during the A tests at the end of WWII. I picked it up, waiting for the new Arkady Renko book due in a few days, and was hooked with the first page. I only wish Cruz Smith would write about this area more often; to me some of his more interesting work is the two Gypsy books, Rose and December 6. They don't receive the attention of the Renko books, but they offer glimpses into worlds I could never experience otherwise. A masterful early work by a great novelist, not to be dismissed.

Good Start
I am a big Renko fan, but was curious that he wrote this book first. It was a great plot, but a bit wordy. He became more concise in future novels. interesting read.

Wonderful writing
Easily the best Martin Cruz Smith novel I've read. It has everything--character problems, cultural explorations, religion, and a looming epidemic (but written before the Covid pandemic). For me, it touched on three or more areas that I care about outside of the fictional world of this book.

This early work of Martin Cruz Smith really is the tops. It is a real thriller, much more so than some of his better known work, but one imbued with knowledge and fascination. We learn about the desert, it's mesas, climate, vegetation and wildlife: we learn about the Hopi and Nevajo nations and their art, cultures and religions: we learn about bats, particularly vampire bats and their relationship with mankind and disease: we learn a lot of chemistry, particularly the possible methods of controlling or eradicating vampire bats and their dangers. Rarely have I enjoyed a thriller so much and perhaps more important, learnt so much fascinating 'stuff' from one. Yes please Martin, let's have more of the same as suggested by another reviewer.
