It eliminates the button which can cause discomfort when the hat is being worn with over the head hearing protection. 2. An IR (Infra red) patch can be placed on the patch for field ops. **Q: Can I get this hat without the patch in the center?** A: Jeffreyn, we do offer a very similar style without the patch. Definitely measure your head before buying though. With the flex material its good to give yourself a little extra. It'll still fit snug, but I would hate to wear this a size too small all day. It's a good looking hat, even without a patch on the front. The notches in the bill are great. They lock into place when I wear my Oakley Fuel Cells, preventing either from bouncing around and it feels very secure. This is the standard notch, so it doesn't really lock in with aviators (they have a "terra notch" for that), but that by no means prevents the hat from working well with Aviator style glasses. At that point it's just a more traditional wear. Wear oakley half jacket glasses and this hat is so comfortable with them. Very soft inner elastic around the hat for great comfortable fit. Have a similar hat in under armour stretch fit.
