Then adjust the two chains to set the right depth. Then fine adjustments with the two wing nuts. For sewing the machine is best used with an insert, which is a piece of Perspex or something similar. You can buy these inserts on line but I made one (or get a handy man) from a sheet of Acrylic glass which I purchased from B and Q. Made a template on card with the sewing machine then cut it out with a fret saw. You could also use a router if you have the correct cutter. Transparent Acrylic glass is best as you can see the spool box below the needle. Then you can fit spools without the need for picking up the machine. There is a little ledge of about 1/4 in on the inside. I have a Janome 7700 quilting machine with a 10" throat it fits in there and then some. I have the shelf at about 3 1/2" and have a clear acrylic "table that fits onto my machine and sits on the top of the cabinet top. Was a bit fiddly getting my sewing machine positioned at the correct level, but sat firmly when finished. It's a couple of inches shorter than my kitchen table, which means I can get a more comfortable height adjustment on my sewing chair. Very pleased with this table, very sturdy and clean looking.
