No matter which side you're on, it's a fun game
I was a big fan of MW2 before the multiplayer devolved into a mess of killstreak rewards and frustration. For the first few months that game was out, the online portion was worth playing. I was routinely towards the top of the standings after matches, had my fair share of killstreaks, and enjoyed playing the game. After a while, it became more frustrating to play than it was worth, mainly due to the killstreaks. You had people taking advantage of bugs and glitches to run the map, and I would frequently find myself dead within seconds of spawning from a drone strike, AC-130, Apache, whatever. I put that game and its shortcomings aside after a friend told me about Bad Company 2. The campaign was fun, but the multiplayer is what pulled me in and kept me playing eagerly for months. So when I heard that the beta for Battlefield 3 had come out, I was excited. I played it for a couple days before it expired and couldn't wait for the game to release. I watched every trailer and preview I could find and followed the DICE and EA blogs. I pre-ordered the game through Amazon and got game day delivery. The game got delivered to my office and I spent the rest of the day in an unfocused haze, because I couldn't wait to get home and play. First off, I'm old school in that I like to play through the campaign before putting in the multiplayer. I was expecting big things from the single player, and unfortunately the game failed to deliver. I have a big enough hard drive, so I installed the HD textures and downloaded the release day patch. The story was interesting, but the campaign had quite a few bugs and quirks. The gameplay was fun, but these flaws took something away from the experience. From what I've seen, it seems like some of my friends didn't experience the same ones as I did, so your mileage may vary. After a few days of playing the campaign, I popped in the multiplayer. One word: WOW. Since I didn't play online the first few days, I was lucky enough to miss all of the server issues. I had no problem getting right into a game of Rush. The experience hadn't changed from BFBC2, which is a good thing. The visuals are much better, the vehicles are better, the maps are gigantic, and a few of the minor tweaks are great (being able to communicate with the entire team instead of just your squad). I work during the week and have other things to do after I get home from work, so I mostly get to play this on the weekends. Now I find that my weekends are heavily devoted to playing this game. If you're looking for a game comparable to MW3, you're looking in the wrong place. The only thing that these two games have in common is the modern setting. The multiplayer efforts are completely different, and serve different purposes. MW3 is a lot more run and gun, fast-paced, frenetic action for 10 minutes. BF3 can be slower, more tactical and strategy-driven, more cooperative, and a game of Rush can take 30+ minutes. One isn't inherently "better" than the other, because they're two different things. That being said, I very enthusiastically recommend this title, purely for the multiplayer.

Enough with the fanboyism
I will try to make my review as unbiased as possible, firstly there is no way to review this game without comparing it to a different fps so for reviewing purposes obviously we will be comparing it to call of duty. I've owned and xbox 360 since 2007, just recently got a ps3. I've played call of duty since call of duty 3 while really playing competitively since call of duty 4, I've messed around with people who play in actual tournaments like MLG and such which is cool because that should tell you I spend more time killing people than respawning or getting mad because I die. Having said that call of duty was great for when it was original and there was nothing like it that could come even close to being able to provide such fun and endless hours of frustration and excitement, there simply wasn't. The last few years the call of duty franchise obviously has become more mainstream and appealing to a wider audience therefore it sells millions and millions of copies every year even though it is the same game just rebranded with a new name and a few "features" that keeps it "new". I did not know about the battlefield series until I played bad company 1 on 360, at the time I thought it was a joke, I found the controls and gameplay to be so foreign from what I was used to (call of duty) that I did not enjoy playing it at all. The battlefield series since has made GIGANTIC leaps and has not dissapointed in providing a bigger badder better product than their predecessor. Battlefield 3 is not an exception to this rule. DICE and EA have produced a masterpiece, graphics, gameplay, overall presentation of the game is polished, yes you have to install the HD texture pack, yes there are two discs, one for multiplayer and one for singleplayer, seriously I only play multiplayer so that singleplayer disc will be picking up some dust and might see the light of day when I decide I want some achievements. Battlefield 3 does an awesome job to create a more realistic environment of war that call of duty fails to do, the weapon sounds and the effect it has on objects such as walls and hesco barriers are like no other and the lighting and detail on environmental features such as bushes and brushes are all top class. People do not enjoy this game because it is a totally different style of play than call of duty. This game is team based and you must work to support your team while denying the other team to do so. bullet drop from sniper shots is also something that makes the game stand out as supposed to the quick scoping done on call of duty. Battlefield 3 is a true representation of what a fps really is, the ability to blow down walls to make new entry points so that you can reach your objective, the vehicle selection that is available for you to use to help you overtake the enemy position, now I've only played about 3 hours of multiplayer on battlefield 3 last night and had no issues with lag or getting kicked from servers, I did have issues finding the game at first but I quickly figured out you can search for servers by number of players and jump in a server that only has 3 players in the lobby, by the time you hit join server, the server will be full therefore the people searching for a random server receive those errors, and that just means a LOT of people are playing the game therefore should not hinder the game's rating like a lot of people have done. Most of the negative reviews that have been made you can read and see that the person reviewing has a distinct love for call of duty and do not enjoy anything other than that game which is fine, this game is not call of duty, does that make it a bad game? no it certainly does not, battlefield 3 has everything that I enjoy in a fps minus all the little angry 12 year old thugs who think they are the best at everything and honestly I am glad these kids enjoy playing call of duty because that just means I do not have to listen or play with them and that makes battlefield 3 even that much better.

Better than other reviewers tell you.
Alright, I understand that this game had a lot of hype. This may be what has given such a great game such an average overall score (3 stars), because everyone thought that the game would be better than it actually is. HOWEVER, it is still an amazing game, it is just that EA hyped the new Frostbite 2 engine up so much that expectations were overblown. The game looks great on my Xbox 360, though I am using the HD pack and the game doesn't look nearly as good without it, specifically in the way of textures. It plays at the usual 30 fps, which is not a problem at all, and runs at slight under 720p (it actually runs at 1280x704). This is still better than other games such as Black Ops, mind you. With that out of the way, I am now going to break up this review into 4 parts. 1. GRAPHICS 4.5/5 -The graphics on this game are amazing. They may not be on par with what was expected, but they are still outstanding. -The Frostbite 2 engine and the new ANT system provide better destruction and animation than BFBC2. -I haven't noticed and screen tearing or anything, however I've noticed a few frame rate drops, especially in campaign mode when the fighting gets intense. 2. GAMEPLAY 5/5 -BF3 has great controls, and is just generally fun to play. -Though the online games are a little slow at times, the addition of new game modes such as TDM are sure to keep all players interested -Frostbite 2 does have certain things such as bullet drop that may put off some players, but I find it quite fun to (somewhat) realistically snipe out enemies instead of just pointing the crosshairs at their head and shooting. Long distance shots in this game are extremely satisfying. -Destruction is awesome. 'Nuff said. 3. MULTIPLAYER 5/5 -Online multiplayer is a lot of fun. There may be only 24 players as opposed to the 64 on PC, but this is not a problem with slightly scaled down maps. -Some people complain about the vehicles in this game. In my opinion, they add a great deal of variety in gameplay and make the game more immersive. If you don't like them, however, you can always set the server type to "infantry only" in the xbox server browser. Problem solved. -Co-op is especially fun, being made up of 6 missions that you can do with a friend. They vary from sniping to run-and-gun to helicopter flying. In addition, there are some great guns (usable in online multiplayer) than can only be unlocked through playing this game type -Speaking of unlocks, BF3 has a ridiculous amount of guns and attachments to be unlocked. These guns will literally fit any gaming style, along with the perks and gadgets that can also be unlocked. 4. SINGLE PLAYER 3.5/5 -Yeah, the story is somewhat generic, but its still fun to play. It's a little Black Ops-esque but I enjoyed it. -There is a great variety of missions, same as in the online co-op. -Although the campaign could have been better, let's face it. This is a game you buy for online multiplayer. Thanks for reading this review, and I'm sorry it was somewhat short. I was pressed for time while writing it! I highly recommend that you buy BF3. See you on the Battlefield.

Excellent Game with a Troubled Beginning
Preface: I've been a gamer all my life, and am fans of multiple genres. I've loved the Battlefield series since BF 1942, but I have also enjoyed series like Call of Duty, Gears of War, Mass Effect, Assassins' Creed, Madden, etc. As a first person shooter in a modern setting, Battlefield 3 ultimately draws a lot of comparisons to the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare series. But comparing the two is a mistake: they are totally different games. The Call of Duty series focuses on fast-paced arena-style multi-player combat where kills are the goal and you will generally play with anywhere from 8-16 people. Battlefield 3 focuses on massive battle scenarios (often featuring vehicles, both land and air) that are objective based, encouraging teamwork with games that will typically have 20-24 players. They are very different, and each has their own merits. Personally I enjoy both, and I do not think one is better than the other; they're entirely different. As for Battlefield 3 itself, it's one of the most exhilarating games in recent memory. It requires tactical thinking and a methodical approach, where sticking with your team-mates is essential. Lone-Ranger Rambo-like behavior, while often effective in Call of Duty, will only get you killed in Battlefield. Many of the "Call of Duty is so much better" reviews very obviously come from people used to playing this way, if you bother to read what they have to say. But in Battlefield you have to move from cover to cover, covering your squad with suppressive fire as you go. A cool feature is that most of the objects in the world can be destroyed by explosives. Staying in a building when a tank comes around the bend may seem wise at first, but it might just bring down the building around you. Battlefield creates an experience much like what you would see in a war film, not the latest action-hero flick. Many reviews complain about the campaign, and admittedly it is nothing to write home about. I have enjoyed it, but Battlefield honestly does not stand up to its peers like Call of Duty and Gears of War in this regard. But the Battlefield series has never really been about campaign play. To me that's like judging Assassin's Creed on its multiplayer component when the focus is on the single-player story. Battlefield 3 will not wow you with the campaign, but the massive mayhem of large-scale mutltiplayer battles more than makes up for it. Many reviews also mention problem with bugs in the game. I've had Battlefield since the day it was released and I'll be the first to admit it was buggy in the beginning. But with subsequent patches the it has been getting better. An especially effective patch was released a little over a week ago, and since then the game has played like a dream for me. Matchmaking issues were resolved and the lag that would crop up from time to time was greatly reduced. Trying to play games with an Xbox Live Party is still a little bit of a headache, but my friends and I have found ways to work around it, and I trust that it will eventually be resolved with a patch as well, seeing as how many people have trouble with it. In summary: Battlefield 3 presents a massive multiplayer experience like no other shooter out there. More than any other popular game it puts you in the shoes of having to think and make decisions like a real soldier would in a war zone. The single player story, while fun, is nothing special. While it was troubled in the beginning with some nasty bugs, they've mostly been resolved now. I thoroughly recommend this game for someone who wants to experience the rush of what it's like to be on a battlefield, working with and relying on your squad-mates to ensure you achieve your objective. [Noe: I would recommend installing both the HD textures AND the multiplayer game disk to the hard drive of your console. It greatly reduces the load time and visual glitches in the game.]

Better now.
Last update*** Since the game came out, EA has improved on most of my complaints but they use game codes to limit used game purchases which really bugs me. I would rate this a solid 5 stars now other than that. I still think co-op should be longer but oh well. I don't lose connection very often, maybe 1/100 games. Only issue now is people can rent servers so you don't really know what type of game you're getting into. I wish EA/Dice would keep a decent amount of their servers. I've been in a couple of games doing really well and then I get kicked by the admin/renter since I'm doing better than them. There has been a couple updates for the game, including a map pack that also introduced a few new weapons. Even though the game is months old, it's still fun and has plenty of people online. Hopefully they come out with more map packs and weapons. _________ Well the game is fun when you get to play. Playing online as co-op, it would randomly freeze my 3 month old Xbox. Then the servers went down multiple times for very long times. I switched to single player campaign which is a whole new disc, which in itself is annoying to switch between discs but if graphics are better it's worth it. It will randomly freeze on you too in single player. I can understand somewhat how online freezes since it's the release day and there's tons of people on here but EA should have expected it and had extra servers to keep up pace. I saw some people saying people shouldn't be complaining about servers going down..to that I say..they had a beta that was in huge demand. They should have had their act together before it was released. It would be one thing if it was a much cheaper game but $60 is a lot for something that lets you down in the middle of having fun. I disagree with the one time use code to play online. So basically I can only play this game online on my Xbox, can't share with friends like I could with other games, then if I decide to sell it I will get less for it because who ever does buy it won't be able to play online unless they buy another access code for $10. Just seems like EA is being greedy...it would be one thing if there was a good gaming experience but it isn't so far. The reason I got on here is because in under an hour this is my third freeze on single player. One thing different is the new game guides you through campaign, where before you could somewhat do what you wanted. If things change I will update my review. I didn't know there were so many fan boys for this game either, it seems like people just go to negative reviews and tell them their stupid and to go play other games..but then again these are probably the same 12 year olds that are on Xbox Live that scream at you. ***UPDATE: Changed my 1 star to 3 star. Servers have been a little better, I played yesterday for about an hour and got kicked off twice, the first time they came back up right away. The second time it took 20 minutes. As a suggestion from someone on here..I installed the games to the hard drive to help with freezing issues and so far I haven't had any. If/when they fix the servers so I can go without getting kicked off or not as often..I will update this again to 4 stars. I'm not giving it 5 stars because co-op and campaign are too short in my opinion and the whole thing about having to use unique codes to play bugs me. Overall this game is an alright buy, if I didn't have friends to play it with I wouldn't bother to buy it if it was over $30. I would suggest just picking up a used copy of Bad Company 2 and enjoy that until there's a price drop. The game has good gameplay but people are too easily impressed, I would have expected more from a $60 game.

Really is just... disappointing in so many ways EDITED!!
First off, I am not a COD fangirl. I enjoy and own all COD games excluding MW3 at this point, but I also own all the Battlefield games. I enjoy both series a great deal. But this is almost as big a let down as Black Ops was, and World at War. Basically all the bases have already been covered in other reviews. For me, it just doesn't have the feel it should. I enjoy a good multiplayer game, but the way this one is set up just doesn't work. At all. At least not so far. If you want to play with friends it's as others have stated, a massive chore, and you're extremely lucky to end up in even the same group together. No connection issues, it just seems EA does NOT like you being in groups with friends. Which means your chances of ending up with foul mouthed children that think getting killed in a game is the end of everything, shoot up immensely. If I was basing the game on online only features, honestly that, combined with EA's online practice and setup would net the game not even 1 star. But I found the Campaign actually kind of fun in some ways. It is linear, way too linear. The fully destructible environment is really pretty awesome! It's a feeling I never experienced in a FPS to be hiding behind a cement pillar or some sandbags and notice that the shots coming at you are chipping away at the cover until none remains! It's a huge step forward in FPS, but it shoots itself in the foot by not allowing you to fully utilize it. What good are fully destructible walls, pillars, buildings, etc. if you cannot use them and have to follow a set course? This alone brings the game to just 2 stars. It's like having a V8 but only getting to run it on 4 cylinders. Why do I need to be able to destroy a wall if I have to go through a predetermined course and door? FPS's are meant for action and fun, not walking down a set path, watching endless cutscenes, and participating in multiple fights that consist of pushing a button you are told then sitting back for 1 or 2 minutes as the fight takes a prescripted path all it's own. The game has a lot of steps forward. Too many to list, really. But at the same time, it has even more steps back. I wouldn't give it any stars because of EA's online practice and the fact that it just is more trouble than it's worth to play with any type of group of friends. Not to mention that you have these gorgeous, massive maps, but so few people on it, that you are indeed lucky to even come across anyone to fight. And if you do... Glitches abound. But the campain is honestly fun in a few places, and the story, it is directly ripped style wise from the COD series, nothing new or special, but it does have fun points and a few fun missions. They give it the 2 stars. Will update my review if any patches come out that add to or detract from the game as it stands 11-7-2011. Wanted to love this game. But it's just... Ok. And with the hype, expectations, it was just a major letdown in too many areas if I'm honest. So was Black Ops. And I am afraid MW3 will be much the same. Edit: I decided to bump my review up to 4 stars. Online has actually gotten much better, and it is quite fun. Still no excuse for the online practice EA uses. I'm still a little let down by this game, but to be honest online is getting better. I'm going to give it 4 stars as it is actually now something you can play and have fun with!

Battlefield 3 Review - Hardcore Competitive Gamer
Let's get one thing straight - this game is more deserving of stars, at least 4 to 4.5. I find that most people who reviewed this game either had just picked up the series and probably played it for a few days and gave a review, or those who think this a CoD game would run out and get shot down. My advice is to play it a little longer and actually get good at it. Graphics and gameplay are a complete win. The Campaign is great, it reminds me of Black(Xbox) with the interrogation of the soldier. Hell, a campaign is a campaign, this game was designed to be realistic, so don't think for one second you can just do whatever in campaign, or else you'll get wrecked easy. Think. The Multiplayer is unique, you have the ability to drive tanks, jets, little buggys with turrets, and helicopters, or you can play the ground force and kill enemies the old fashioned way. So far the game offers Team Deathmatch, Squad Deathmatch, Squad Rush, and Conquest. Everything in this game is customizable, including your vehicles which you have to use to unlock more customization. The more you play with a certain kit (Assault, Support, Engineer, Recon) the more weapons you attain, of course you would have to play with a certain weapon to unlock parts for that weapon. There is literally no lag in this game due to dedicated servers which you can also customize to your liking. It would be something to do since there is always a chance you may be split up with your friends, though not recommended. Some people think this annoying, I don't care much for it since you can switch over if there is an open spot. Game comes with a HD optional download which I recommend. If you don't have a hard drive bigger than 4 GB already, I don't know why you own an Xbox. Versus Call of Duty: -BF3 has dedicated servers, little to no lag -You can sprint forever -When you die you have the ability to change up your class as well as all your weapons and equipment and can use unlocked parts right away -Large scale maps -Weapons and weapon fire realistic ex; bullet drop on snipers cause you to aim a little higher at enemies from large distances -No such thing as killstreaks, you want Mortars? Slap on the Support Kit class and it IS your equipment. Want reconnaissance? Slap the Recon class on and send your bot out to locate enemies. You get the idea -Campers? Point them out for your squad and let them do the dirty work by taking them out So you judge from my review and decide if this game is worth a buy. I think so, so do all of my hardcore gaming friends out there. P.S. I play CoD too and can easily tell a good game from a bad one. Battlefield 3 reigns over CoD any day.

This is truly a must play!
I agree with some of the other reviewers that this game shouldn't have all the low rating. Yes the server has problems but that's no reason to give it a one star review. Alright well on to my review, iv been a fan of battlefield since 1942 and of call of duty since the first modern warfare so ill try to give an unbiased option. This game imo is fun IF you have friends to play it with. Playing alone can get frustrating but when playing with friends, this game can give some VERY fun experiences. Story review Overall i thought the story was pretty good. Their are those who said that the story is like black ops story with the flash backs and stuff but i felt as if it was pretty unique. Out of a score of 10 for the story i would rate the story about a 9/10 Pros +Very good graphics +interesting story +Amazing scenery Cons -The AIs are very accurate!(which is bad but gives more of a challenge!) -Somewhat confusing for me on whats going on at first. -A bit of lag at times CO-OP review There are 5 missions on the co op which you do different task and these missions aren't related to the story for those who were wondering. Just like the multiplayer this mode can give some pretty fun experience if playing with a friend. I suggest you also have your mic on to coordinate well with the other player. Out of a score of 10 i would rate the co-op about a 8/10. Pros +Very fun +Neat missions +It test your ninja skills :p Cons -Needs more missions then 5 -AIs can get annoying by their deadly accuracy -A few AI spawning bugs?(A couple times there were a large group of AIs suddenly appearing very close to the players overpowering them) Multiplayer review Alright now to the main part of the game. The multiplayer from my experience has not disappointed me yet! As i said above the multiplayer is extremely fun when playing with friends, which i have most of the time i played multiplayer. There are different mode to play like conquest which you just capture points and kill the enemy until their respawn counts are 0. Rush which you must defend your base from the enemy or you attack the enemy's base to win. Then there's TDM which is self explanatory. Then squad rush which is a 4v4 mode of rush then squad TDM. Out of a score of 10 ill rate it a 9.5/10.The multiplayer is good but there a bit of problems that take the points down a bit. Pros +Fun! +Different game modes +Vehicles +Different equipment for almost anything you use Cons -The servers going off issues(hopefully to be fixed soon) -Snipers camping -People hogging jets or just sitting there waiting for a jet just to get killed a couple mins later :\ -Would of love to see more sea vehicles Overall i think this is a must have game! I can see myself playing this until the next battlefield. Oh and don't let those one star reviews turn you away from this as most of the reviews are fake or were wriiten about the server issues which has gotten better!
