    Nakaba Suzuki does NOT disappoint!

You wanna know how fast I bought this book? About a few days after discovering it existed. Yeah, I love it that much.I first discovered Nanatsu no Taizai or The Seven Deadly Sins while reading Fairy Tail(in an advertisement). At first, I was not impressed and did not think I would enjoy it. Then I found out that there was also a fairly new anime adaption of it. That's when I first discovered it was called The Seven Deadly Sins. Being a Fullmetal Alchemist fan I scratched my chin in thought. That seemed to peak my interest so I decided to check out the manga, the whole time I was thinking, "Try me, try me..." I still wasn't convinced it was for me. But after reading only the first chapter...I. was. Hooked. I fell in love with this manga, it was just so...interesting and different than anything I've ever read before! And, just so you know, it's nothing like Fullmetal Alchemist, and nothing like Fairy Tail in my opinion. A lot of people say The Seven Deadly Sins is just a rip off of Fairy Tail...Yeah, not true. Don't get me wrong, I love Fairy Tail but there aren't that many similarities between that and this. Nanatsu no Taizai is something completely new and original. I love how unpredictable the story and characters are, it makes it thrilling to read.I've already watched the anime and am painfully waiting for the second season. Though, in all honesty, the manga is better(at least so far). So if you are sitting here, reading this and wondering if you should buy the book or not...I think the decision is fairly simple.

Loved the anime, now I want to read the Manga

This is the first manga I have ever read and the anime holds true to the manga. If you love the Netflix anime, you will love reading the manga.

A Bit of a Bland Start, But as the Anime Makes Clear, This Series Has Promise

*The Seven Deadly Sins* is set in a fantasy world analogous to medieval Europe, where a brave princess is seeking the help of legendary criminals and warriors to save her kingdom. These warriors were supposed horrible criminals who each did some unspeakable past crime or "sin" represented by an animal and vice (such as pride, wrath, so on). These folks were given another shot at freedom when they formed a unit designed to help the kingdom of Liones on really tough missions. Of course, later events prove that the founder, Meliodas, had an even deeper purpose of the Sins, but that is for the future. As the story begins, we find Elizabeth, third princess of the kingdom of Liones, in disguise searching for the titular Sins. This legendary, and to some, infamous, group is believed to have plotted to overthrow the kingdom, and were forced to flee into hiding. Of course, they did not do what they are accused of, and were indeed framed. But that is for later in the narrative. Despite being sought for years, no one has found most of these people, or has any idea what happened to them. But now they are needed, badly, to save the kingdom and many lives. The order that used to oversee the Sins, the Holy Knights, are incredibly powerful, well-trained warriors themselves. Granted, they are not as strong as the Sins, but that is hard to be. The leadership of the Holy Knights has taken over the kingdom, imprisoning most of the royal family. Thus, Elizabeth has undertaken her quest to stop them. Her goal, farfetched as it seems to try to attempt, is to find the Seven Deadly Sins, and convince them to come out of hiding and aid the royal family and the people of Liones. She is sure that, contrary to some rumors, the Sins can't be dead. They were too powerful and larger than life, she believes. Obviously faulty logic, though the group *is* alive, as the title should tell you.The characters in this manga at first do not exactly appear to be all that original. Indeed, my first reaction to this manga was to come to the conclusion that they are very common for an ensemble cast in a *shonen* work. I only thought the air of mystery they had and the complexity of the plot made this at all a worthwhile read. While there is still some truth to this at first and such, as the plot goes on, as shown by the anime adaptation, things change. The characters become *incredibly* complex and layered. I am once again taking up this manga as I'm quite eager to see the source material.Of course, those that know me know that I love the idea of true companions and close bonds of friendship. This group seems to have them, though there are gulfs that have to be gotten over and traumas that have to be worked past. But if you've seen the anime, you know that they do so. Therefore I am looking forward to, again, reading the original manga to see this there as well. The characters (to be introduced in future volumes given what I saw in the anime) of Ban and King are said to be fan-favorites. Me? I like Melodias best. I find him interesting, though they are all quite interesting. At first, it was largely that he was voiced by Yuki Kaji, the seiyuu who voices such roles as Hyoudou Issei in *High School DxD* and Eren Yeager in *Attack on Titan*, and also is one of my favorite male seiyuus. Now it's because he has a really interesting and cool arc and character, though sometimes quite on the edge of acceptable behavior.I quite like how the mangaka uses Biblical themes and motifs in a unique way that is kinda quite different from real life, and yet still hearkens to it. The Sins themselves are based on the actual names and animals of the concept in real life Christian myth. Of course, some of the animals are changed up and one new animal (a dragon) is added in, but the same ideas are gotten across nicely. The first volume might be a tad bland to some, but trust me, if you give this and future volumes a chance, I think you will like them. In large part, the reason I am referring to future spoilers a bit more than normal, and not being as restrained, is to present the argument that this series is worth staying with. This volume, though good, is still a tad generic and underwhelming. The future volumes, if the anime is any indication, are going to make for a terrific series.Rating: 3.5/5 Stars.
