## Overview

The JDS c-88quake Earthquake Alarm is a battery-powered seismic sensor that detects the faster P-wave of earthquakes, providing early warnings before the damaging S-wave arrives. With adjustable sensitivity and a loud alarm, it alerts you to quakes occurring hundreds of miles away, helping you act swiftly to protect your family and property. Ideal for seismic zones, it automatically resets after events and is trusted by users in high-risk areas for reliable, life-saving alerts.

## Description

The Quake Alarm is designed to provide instant warning of seismic activity by detecting the "P" wave (compression wave) of an earthquake, which travels faster than the more destructive "S" wave (shear wave). The Quake Alarm saves valuable seconds by removing the guesswork in earthquake detection. It is capable of detecting large earthquakes that occur hundreds of miles away and can detect moderate to minor earthquakes for many miles around your local area. One very important advantage of the Quake Alarm is that it can wake you up and alert you the moment the quake starts so that you can immediately take cover or tend to other family members. The Quake Alarm can eliminate confusion, save valuable seconds and provide peace of mind.

Review: It actually works! - This Earthquake Alarm is very reliable once you install it properly. Yes, it requires calibration, and it will take some time to get it working fine, specially if you are not in an active seismic zone. I have installed it in México City, and after a month I have detected quakes located as far as El Salvador. The alarm generates a loud but not annoying sound. Since it works using a pendulum located inside a triangle acting as a limit that when touched it will sound. This alarm detects the p-waves which travel faster than the destructive s-waves, thus this alarm will sound before the quake and sometimes you will not even feel it because it is so far or too weak. How many seconds before, depends on how near or far you are from the epicenter. Mexico city is a seismic area and the idea was to detect those quakes at 250 miles away where the faults are located, right in the pacific ocean or in Oaxaca. We also have the Popocatepetl Volcano and so far there has been no activity there, so I still have to wait for some activity. You will learn how far or how strong a quake is by the way it sounds, and you can act accordingly. For instance, a quake located at El Salvador (1000 miles away and magnitude 7) will only do a couple of pings in a one second period, while one located at 300 miles at magnitude 5 will sound with some long and short pings during period of 6 seconds. I guess that a magnitude 7 in such area will generate a steady sound for at least 10 seconds. Since almost every day makes a sound, my family try to guess how far and how strong the quake is. A quake is no fun, but science is as we are learning how the earth works and how events that are located very far affect where we live. With this device there are really no false alarms, you may jump next to the alarm and it will simply stay quiet, even though I have set it to be very sensitive (locating the pendulum very close to the triangle). To verify everything I have subscribed to the earthquake notification service at [...] via email and that way you can receive the quake information promptly and associate the pings in your alarm to the magnitude of the quake. Now when it sounds, I take note of the hour and the sound generated by the alarm, after that I usually receive an email in a few minutes with the details. This is a must if you live in seismic active zone, like California, or Chile. Knowing in advance that a quake is coming could save your life. The bad news is that if you live right at the epicenter or where a fault is, there is no enough time to get a warning. The pendulum works by moving at the presence of p-waves, specially those coming from the sides than below. Si vives o trabajas en la Col. Roma o en el Centro de la ciudad y especialmente en algún edificio, no lo pienses, este aparato es para ti
Review: Simply works - 5-stars for an affordable shaky toy. Likes: Affordable, long battery life, works. Dislikes: The velcro issue, but I resolved the falling off the wall issue by leaving the battery cover off, then run a long but small/narrow screw through the small opening in the battery compartment that's slotted to the battery cover, then I just set the battery somewhat in the battery compartment without the battery cover. Never falls off the wall now. Add: I placed a couple dots on the sensitivity adjustment knob with a sharpie to aid the few weeks it took me to get the sensitivity adjusted by having the dots provide a somewhat reference, since the knob is small and stiff, I could reference approximate if I didn't get some turn or overshot what I was trying. Living in California, but not in the more major fault/active areas (Sacramento), my area does get some shakes on occasion mostly from the more active areas with larger magnitude quakes. I have it adjusted now that with the occasional dinging, I can confirm quakes online - when (time), where (location) and magnitude, for more near active areas. At first I had it set too sensitive and I think maybe a little settling of the home caused dinging. I should attach one to the fridge and another to the microwave just to annoy the wife when she slams the doors. Note: I have two little doggies. When it dings, one runs to the far side of the home, other barks. The barker aids letting me know if I'm sleeping because I have the quake alarm on the other end of the house from the bedroom. I can hear it (it's facing toward & down the hallway) but the barker goes off immediately and I have to tell her "okay okay" to turn her barker off. So if in a deep sleep, she ensures I'm going to know if the ding'r goes dinging. Living in an quake active state, what's not to like about it. one can never have to many toys - er my wife thinks otherwise.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: I live in st. louis. how much warning would it give for a quake in new madrid, mo?**
A: OK, so to answer this question, you need to first understand how the device itself works. It's real simple. There is a ring with an alarm and a pendulum hanging in the center of the ring. What this device detects is two different types of waves, the sound wave and the shear wave. This thing detects the sound wave pretty darn well but it also depends on the size and duration of the waves... you might hear a little ring for an insignificant but sizable quake, but a more pronounced alarm when the wave is significant in both size and duration. The sound wave will travel through solid objects and cause the pendulum to swing and contact the ring which makes the alarm sound, the 9V batter lasts for quite a long time because the circuit is normally open and does not allow for leakage current. The waves start from the epicenter so it depends on where the fault erupts, to calculate the time of warning and technically speaking no one can precisely provide an answer of how much warning this device or any other device would give. The New Madrid fault is a real threat to quite a few largely populous cities and it closely follow the western Tennessee border and while it does not point either end directly at St. Louis, Earthquakes are circular and St. Louis is probably anywhere between 70 and 150 miles from the closest measurement to the fault. If the fault were to erupt at the southern point, you would get more time to get to cover. If it were to erupt on the northern point of the fault, your probably looking at under 5-10 seconds if your lucky but in that time, you become ahead of the game and now when the shear wave hits your already in reaction mode... to that point... The second wave is the shear wave or the shaking. when the shaking starts, the device will start going crazy and constantly sounding. Honestly, it is largely confirming that you are feeling a quake and not something else... I live within sight of the San Andreas Fault and have had this device in my home for years. I can tell you first hand that it absolutely does work but it won't trip for small quakes that wouldn't cause damage i think the lowest setting is about a 5.0 or so... which i have experienced while only a few feet from the device so i could visually see what happened. It was a 5 seconds warning for a 5.0 quake about 60 miles away but it provided immediate confirmation that the slightly sea sick feeling we experience as humans from the sound wave... If you don't have one... Get 2... if you have one, get another... Best advise i can give to anyone living close to a fault or concerned they will be caught off guard by a quake... this should be as mandatory as a smoke detector in your area...

**Q: how loud is the alarm? do you have one of these on each floor of the house? one in each bedroom? only one in the whole house? thanks.**
A: Hi, the alarm is a simple chiming buzz, it plays following the mechanical contact of the swinging pendulum against the adjacent metal frame (frame has an adjustable width in order to set the right sensitivity you wish).I think the alarm "sound pressure" is sufficient just in these two circumstances :1) If you are awake and around 6-7 meters from the device 2) If you are sleeping and the device is set close to your bed (within 1-2 meters) in my case I fixed it on the wall, half meter far from my bed, so that it will be able to wake me up. (consider that I live in apartment so it is a single-floor home. It is a 100mq. apartment, not a huge apartment. For my application I think it works fine) Being the buzzer-contact activated by a mechanical way you have the advantage the battery charge will not be used unless the quake happens. Battery will be ready for long time (will discharge just for "oldness")

**Q: I live in MN where a huge quake could occur in eastern MO, and past ones have been felt further than where I am. Could this help in my situation?**
A: YES this is the BEST case for this device.Let me be more clear. If the main focus of another giant New Madrid/MO earthquake is in MO and you are say 450 miles away (St Louis,MO to Rochester, MN border is 450 miles according to google) the earthquake alarm would feel the p waves at least 2 to 3 MINUTES (http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=3&cad=rja&ved=0CDYQFjAC&url=http%3A%2F%2Facademics.concord.edu%2Fsckuehn%2FVirtualEarthquake.pdf&ei=4Y8rUpzpNoLM9ATvzYHABA&usg=AFQjCNHc6KVy0i2IpMfXYFUnIBYsQFwWMA&bvm=bv.51773540,d.eWU) before you would otherwise feel the major shaking thus it would give you time to do something - wake up, get outside, get a door open so you aren't trapped inside etc. It works BEST in situations like yours when there is a large quake that is further away because it then gives you the MOST time warning before the later big rolling waves that will hurt you will follow.IT works LEAST well when the quake originates right under your house becuase then both waves hit you at nearly the same instant.since we know the eastern US feels the effects of New Madrid quakes far more than Los Angeles feels the effects of closer quakes we know that Earthquake damage in the Middle of america and the East could be strong as far away as MO.(the New Madrid quake rang church bells in Boston!)

**Q: I live in Oregon where we have a 37% chance of a magnitude 9 or greater earthquake striking within the next 50 years. Approximately 50 miles off the Oregon coast is the Cascadia Subduction Zone where in January 29, 1700 a magnitude 9 earthquake occurred. They occur on average approximately once every 250 years and the …**
A: today is 1/29/18, and I've read that there is now 14% chance for the 9 or greater quake within next 50 years. But Nature lives by it's own rules, and it could happen at any moment. A device like this is valuable even if you only get 10 seconds notice. That 10 seconds could save lives. Definitely get this device, and apply it to a solid post that is connected to the ground. By the way, over the last 10,000 years, the mega quakes are averaged to occur at approx 500 years apart, with significant but smaller magnatude quakes spaced in between those largest ones. But keep in mind that although some mega quakes were spaced as much as about 1,000 years apart, there were others that were only in the 200's apart, so better to be prepared in case we experience one of the shorter intervals. Who's to say for sure.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ It can give you precious seconds of warning to take shelter
*by D***D on November 9, 2018*

This alarm is simple in design with little to go wrong. It works very well, detecting the P waves of an earthquake that race ahead of the damaging S waves, giving you seconds of early warning to take cover. The further away the epicenter of the quake, the more warning time you receive. The alarm sound is very distinct, so it breaks through the ‘this can’t be happening’ mental fog so you can take cover sooner. The unit doesn’t use any power from the 9 volt battery unless it is alarming, so the battery will last for two years or more. It has adjustable sensitivity so you can tune out minor quakes while still allowing warning alarms for important quakes. Don’t let the low price turn you off - this is a well made unit that uses a simple mechanism to reliably detect the early warning P waves of earthquakes. Some years ago I had one of these in my home in Georgia. I was awakened about 5am by the alarm pinging, but the earthquake shaking never came...the epicenter of the quake was more than 170 miles away in Tennessee!
