More great poetry from Amanda Lovelace

*by M***R on Reviewed in the United States on September 27, 2019*

I enjoy modern poetry and Amanda Lovelace's work has been some of my favorite. Her new book "to drink coffee with a ghost" is a collection mainly inspired by her difficult relationship with her late mother . While Lovelace's work often touches on difficult and topics, it is beautiful, relatable and deeply poignant. She uses poetry as a way to work through the things she's dealt with in life, and while my own experiences are different from the author's I found it relevant and believe it could be for anyone who is dealing with or has dealt with loss and strained family relationship. Her poetry is raw and lyrical at the same time, and can be quite emotional to read.Usually I like to savor poetry and will leisurely flips through a book rather than reading it all at once However, I was lucky enough to be given this book as an advance review copy and read it straight through in an hour or so. But, let's be real; Lovelace's work and is compelling enough to devour in this way, though it is definitely something I will enjoy revisiting later. Thanks to Netgalley and Andrews McMeel Publishing for this ARC.

Use as a Daughter's Journey to Healing

*by R***. on Reviewed in the United States on May 14, 2020*

I'm not usually a fan of modern poetry but this subject matter really spoke to me. Amanda's story with her mother is heartbreaking and often a major part of her poetry. I identify with having a challenging relationship with my own mother, to say the least. It was only in recent years that I enjoyed better communication, just to end up losing her.I found a need to turn to poetry again. It always aides me in the healing process. This book discusses grief, letting go, and forgiveness. It’s also heartwarming in the same book opening up both sides of the story. As someone that has left people behind, and been left behind, I found poems in here for myself. I'm happy to have made this purchase and recommend it.

Lovelace's Best and Most Haunting Work Yet

*by S***A on Reviewed in the United States on September 17, 2019*

if you know me you already know i relate to this book. especially the ghost mother section. this spoke to me and my sad, lonely, loveless childhood in a way that not only said "you are not alone" but also "it will get better". this may actually be lovelace's best work yet. there's even a gilmore girls reference (and not just at the end but as prose). i have so much to say yet no words because i've only seen myself on a page like this once before and it feels so good to have it come from the person that inadvertently introduced me to modern poetry in the first place.
