It is intended to be used with USB C devices that have compatibility for display port functionality. If your device is not suitably equipped then the VGA port will not 'drive' a monitor. Fear not though most new/relatively new laptops do support this feature. You just need to check your manual before committing.This device may seem fairly sparsely featured with just a USB A 3.0 socket, a RJ45 LAN socket and a full HD compatible VGA socket. However, it is very, very reasonably priced and is a very cheap way to add these connections to a USB C laptop. You will find you could easily to spend a lot more to get the same combination. You frequently get one or the other at this price but rarely all three. So in my opinion it is very good value.I have two monitors. The first is HMDI and VGA compatible and the second is VGA and display port compatible. This device will be useful with both and will allow me to use a standard VGA to VGA cable between the monitor and the hub. It is also handy to have the Lan socket. My PC does not have one so it means I can connect up to the house Lan for faster and more reliable internet. The USB socket is a fast 3.0 unit and is a useful addition to my laptops somewhat frugal array of sockets. My desktop has 8 USB sockets and I tend to use all of them most of the time. My laptop has 2. So you get the picture. A extra printer perhaps, or a scanner or a USB speaker or a portable data drive/USB stick. Loads of options.I use it is difficult to fault this device. It appears incredibly well made and functions perfectly. The monitor works as well as it can with a good sharp image and well saturated colours. The Lan port provides internet at the fastest speed my set up is capable of and the USB port provides fast data transfer speeds and good plug and play compatibility with a wide range of USB A equipped devices.In common with a lot of these USB hubs the supplied cable is quite short and it takes a while for it to settle and for the hub to lie flat. It does eventually do so and really this is both a common but thankfully minor issue.
